This review is from: The Singer's Schumann (Library Binding)
Thilo Reinhard's 'The Singer's Schumann' is a well written, well laid-out book about Schumann's songs. There is a guide to pronunciation of the lyrics which will be invaluable to those with little or no knowledge of German, or to those with some knowledge but who are not quite sure of one or two issues. Of interest to everyone, though, will be the extensive and scholarly background to the songs and, especially, to the poets who wrote their texts. As Reinhard points out, Schumann was a highly literary cultivated person. Understanding of his world and of the world of the poets he set to music is essential to a good interpretation of the songs. 'The Singer's Schumann' will help immensely in that task. A thourough and thoughtful book.
