This MGM musical helps to epitomize the genre. The 1952 film starred Gene Kelly, Donald O'Connor, and Debbie Reynolds. Reynolds's tracks, particularly "All I Do Is Dream of You" tend to make her sound like one of the munchkins from The Wizard of Oz, which is unfortunate. It's Gene Kelly's songs that are the most enjoyable. The title track is still wonderful, and so engaging you'll want to swing on lightpoles all over town. An outtake of Kelly's version of "All I Do Is Dream of You" is another gem, and the M-G-M Studio Orchestra is at its flawless best throughout--even if some of the incidental music sounds like a Tex Avery cartoon score. --Scott Wilson

I just got this soundtrack for Christmas and I love it!

We all love to listen and sing along, and both my dancing daughters love to play the CD and make up their own dances.

Listening to the soundtrack can't help but make you want to watch the movie again.

In my opinion, three characteristics make a great soundtrack. First, you have to have good songs to start with. Second, the soundtrack has to capture the essence of the movie. In other words, you can listen to a song and know exactly what was going on in the movie when that song was playing. Third, listening to the soundtrack should make you want to watch the movie again.
The Singin' in the Rain soundtrack has all of these characteristics. If you doubt how good the songs from Singin' in the Rain are, then, you have not watched the movie enough. Unlike many soundtracks, the Singin' in the Rain soundtrack has ALL of the songs from the movie on it. Plus, it has outtakes and supplemental songs as well.
As you listen to each song, you can recall the exact dance steps that were being performed during that particular part of the song. Also, as you listen to "Would You," you can't help but think of Lina trying to sing it and missing the beat.
Listening to the soundtrack can't help but make you want to watch the movie again. One of the main reasons I purchased the soundtrack was that I do not have the time to watch the movie as much as I would like. Because the soundtrack does indeed capture the essence of the movie, listening to it is ALMOST like watching the movie. Plus, when listening to the soundtrack, you can TRY to do the dance steps from the movie (Not that I can, but it is fun to try.).
The only bad aspect about the soundtrack is some static that is present on a few songs. It is very negligible, though.
With the CD is a 28-page book that has a lot of interesting information in it. Most notable is a note from the authors, Betty Comden and Adolph Green, that tells the story behind Singin' in the Rain.
This is the best CD and soundtrack I have purchased in a long time!

Well, I wish they had "left in" the tapping feet, but otherwise, this album is the original soundtrack all right! I especially liked it that different versions of some songs were used ("Would You", "All I Do Is Dream of You", "Beautiful Girl", etc.), some only slightly different and others fairly radically. Too bad lyrics weren't included in the booklet! If I may be picky, I would have also liked it more were the photos in color. Otherwise, I can't think of anything else to say other than that if the movie's touched your heart, then this CD ought to do the same!

Of all the movies in the world, this one's my third favorite, so shoot me I'm a Star Wars buff. But that even led me here-because of Carrie Fisher. Debbie Reynolds is a doll in any film and she can sing too. I just love her. Gene Kelly is my favorite dancer of all time and he can sing. Put the two together with Donald O'Connor and what do you get? This terrific one-of-a-kind soundtrack. From the title track all the way through, it boasts great music. There is a minor detraction however, all the tapping is gone, strictly music here. But you learn to appreciate it for what it is. There were a few scenes that were deleted in the film, but the songs were already recorded, so they added it in as extra meterial. In my opinion, the film would've been even better with the scenes in it. Debbie Reynold's extra number "You Are My Lucky Star" is the biggest treat of the extra stuff. You can actually feel the scene unfolding, just by listening to her. And she was only 19, WOW! "Make 'Em Laugh," and "Singin' In the Rain" also are stupendous, obviously. But the only number that Gene, Donald, and Debbie are in together, is "Good Mornin'." That is why it's my personal favorite. The booklet , not liner notes, booklet, is excellent. This is a MUST BUY! Turner puts out quality stuff, I give them that much, God bless 'em. Check out my e-mail address, appropriate, don't you think?

When Singin In the Rain was named the 10th greatest American movie of all time, I was estatic. Truly the witty humor, the stars, setting, and dancing made this movie one of the best. But the biggest factor in this show's success was it's music and the soundtrack captures all the joyment that is felt in the movie. When you buy cd's these days, it's difficult to find more than a few songs that are worth listening to. As for Singin In the Rain, there are dozens of songs that you'll love including: (the title song) Singin In the Rain, Make 'Em Laugh, Moses, Good Morning, Fit As A Fiddle, Broadway Melody Ballet, All I Do Is Dream Of You, etc., etc. With the soundtrack boasting 30 songs, it is definitly a steal for Amazon's asking price.

This version of "Singin' in the Rain" is a unique experience of an original soundtrack from the era of the great movie musicals. Unlike previous versions of the soundtrack, you won't hear taps or dialogue. This version is compiled from the remaining masters and "takes" that could be found. The accompaning booklet is full of insights not only about the movie, but on how the soundtrack was originally recorded. It is a delightful CD which contains quite a few unreleased songs which are a lot of fun. Enjoy!
