Book Description

0393979946 978-0393979947 April 2004
Unlike other texts, The Singing Book gets students singing on the very first day of class. The authors' "Sing first, talk later" philosophy encourages beginning students to sing without judging or constraining themselves, which is an essential prerequisite for learning repertoire and the more technical aspects of the vocal mechanism. The Singing Book's thoughtfully crafted three-part structure begins with motivational chapters, then systematically builds vocal strength and skill through carefully chosen repertoire, and finally introduces important information on the major aspects of developing healthy vocal techniques.

Suitable for all skill levels and voice types, The Singing Book provides an anthology of over sixty songs, chosen specifically for the beginning singer. A 2-CD set (sold separately) provides melody, rhythm guides, and piano accompaniments for all selections in the anthology (with additional keys available on the Student Web Site), and the text's useful appendices feature methods for preparing song texts, extra warm-ups and vocalises, a guide to the International Phonetic Alphabet, and a brief primer on reading music.

4.0 out of 5 stars recommended for voice students, August 16, 2005
By
Kristine (Ontario, Canada) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Singing Book (Spiral-bound)
The Singing Book has proven to be a wonderful resource for learning a selection of popular songs across several genres. Along with the accompanying CD, this compilation provides sheet music and accompaniment, both providing the melody line to facilitate learning songs more easily. The volume also provides background descriptions of the songs which help foster an appreciation for the styles and origins of the music. Some technical notes about singing are also included as appendices to guide learning. I have used this book/CD in combination with formal vocal instruction, albeit it would be suitable for stand-alone use, particularly for those who desire an accessible format for learning songs and developing an appreciation of their own voices. Of note also are those pieces intended for improvisation that encourage one to simply explore one's voice. Finally, some of the arrangements themselves are stellar pieces of music and I have used them for performance, notably Westryn Wynde and Dance of Youth (arranged by Scarlett Antaloczy).

5.0 out of 5 stars Best new book for individuals and classes, December 13, 2005
By
Aimee (Loveland, Colorado) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Singing Book (Spiral-bound)
I use this book for both my individual students and for my group voice classes. As a teacher I love that it covers a wide range of topics and technical information; As a singer I appreciate the variety of song styles and the quantity of songs available in this one volume.
The CD's are also a wonderful tool. Having live insturments (as opposed to synthesized instruments) on the accompaniment CD is invaluable, especially for my students who are just learning to play piano.
I recommend this book to singers of all ages. It is a great tool to use while learning to sing and contains up-to-date concepts regarding vocal health, technique, and care. This book is a necessary addition to any music library.
