Editorial Reviews

A trip down memory lane with The Singing Detective, the critically acclaimed BBC television serial, written by Dennis Potter, starring Michael Gambon which was first broadcast in 1986. The story revolved around mystery writer Philip E. Marlow in wartime Britian and the music in the series reflected the period. This album contains much of the music from the series including tracks by Vera Lynn, Bing Crosby & The Andrews Sisters, Ambrose & His Orchestra, Al Jolson, Ella Fitzgerald, The Ink Spots, Anne Shelton, Lou Preager & His Orchestra, Dick Haymes and The Mills Brothers. EMI. 2010.

I was very disappointed in this new 2010 cd from the BBC. It is not the soundtrack of "The Singing Detective" as advertised. The harmonica piece "Peg O My Heart" which ran on every episode is missing. "Lili Marlene" is not sung by Marlene Dietrich as it was in the miniseries. "It Might as Well Be Spring" is performed by Dick Haymes, but not the version from "The Singing Detective"; Haymes sings the song slower, and you can't picture Dad singing the song in the pub that way. Some of the numbers are the same: "Teddy Bear Picnic" "We'll Meet Again," but this is definitely not the soundtrack that I was expecting from the BBC. Not a keeper.

Ahh... The Singing Detective. And what a superb piece of work it truly is. I have watched this super Dennis Potter series several times over the years since it was first televised in 1986 and it has lost absolutely none of its potency. What a shame then that the BBC could not splice together a true soundtrack from the series - Because this isn't it - It simply won't do BBC!! Sure enough, there are a few tracks on here that were actualy used in the series but most of them are not the versions that were used and there are other songs here that were not in the series at all as far as I am aware. If you really want the songs from the series the only probable way is to look them up separately and download the mp3 versions of each - You'll create yourself a better soundtrack than this poor offering.

As others have pointed out, 2 years ago someone at BBC records apparently decided to ALTER the original soundtrack:
leaving out 4 essential songs, including the theme tune (!!!!!!!!!),
adding 5 songs that have no link whatsoever with the series, and replacing a number of the authentic versions with more recent recordings.
So, avoid this one at all cost and try to find an older print. The original ones can still be found.

Before actor Michal Gambon starred as the Professor in the series of Harry Potter films he starred in this little know quirky BBC serial as that skin-deseased Private Detective reliving his experiences and fantasies for a Hospital bed where he languished... But the music's great and straight from the 1940's and makes excellent mood music for a Christmas scene or time with the tree and lights on... It's a lovely period piece in fact and features old crooners like Bing Crosby and the original hit 'Bones'. Sorry, but the recent remake with Robert downey Junior is too 'Hollywoodised' bearing little or no resemblance to this quirky little soundtrack piece.

Enjoyed the music during the series but not the same on this disc. Music is quite good and "Peg o my heart" wonderful.
