Challenge and Triumph, January 15, 2009
This review is from: Singing on the Heavy Side of the World (Hardcover)
"Mr. John" was in the first group of Peace Corp teachers sent to the newly independent Ukraine, a part of the recently dissolved Soviet Union. In his book, the author, John Deever, presents not only his own story of challenge and triumph, but also the story of a country's challenges and triumphs as it works to create its own identity in a new world. As much a tale of cultural and political differences, the book is also a heart-warming story of sacrifice, growth, generosity, and love.
"Mr.John's" book evokes a powerful sense of place. We who grew up during the time of the Cold WAr and the collapse of the Soviet Union would read in the news of life in this part of the world. John Deever's book, however, puts faces to those people and brings the Ukraine to life.
I highly recommend this book. Not only is it interesting enough to make it difficult to put down the book, it also humanizes a part of the world many of us do not know.

This review is from: Singing on the Heavy Side of the World (Hardcover)
The author weaves his own personal and political experiences in his new role as a Peace Corp volunteer. His words are crafted in a way that engages you in the community and envelopes you in his life at the time. This is a must read for anyone who has lived/traveled abroad or simply wants to gain a broader perspective of life in another country. It gives a greater appreciation of our teachers all around the globe and the human experience.
