I purchased this unit at my local Target Dept. Store for under $50.00 plus 7.25 % sales Tax. I am impressed with the value of this Karaoke Machine and its quality. As for the Microphone sound being low. This is common on almost all Karaoke Machines. The reason being is so that you don't get Feedback from the Units Speaker. I also have another Karaoke Machine and it's microphones work the same way as this Units. Also my Family has a Professional Karaoke Machine that cost well over $2000.00 it also has to have the mic volume turned up in order for your voice to be heard... But as far as this Machine goes its aces in my Book. I would recommend it anyday. Hope this information helps someone pick a good machine for a great price.PS: If this Unit is attached to a good Stereo Reciever the sound is 100 times better and the mic doesn't have to be turned way up.

A lot of reviewers have been commenting that the microphone doesn't work, or it has to be very close to your mouth. I suspect that those comments have scared off a few, if not a lot of potential buyers. All microphones for singing are designed that way to variable degrees. The reason is to prevent the mic from picking up other sounds besides the singers voice. If your microphone picked up the sound coming from the Karaoke machine speakers there would be a loud screeching noise called feedback. The designers prevent this by allowing the microphone to pick up only the sound right in front of the microphone. It's not unusual for a mic of this type and price to need the singers lips to almost touch the microphone to be effective. More expensive versions allow a little more distance, but the principle remains the same. I hope this helps you to better make a decision.

I knew I was in for some hard times as soon as I saw this contraption prominently placed in my living room (right next to my 30" flatscreen!). A brief inspection proved the worst of my suspicions: A karaoke machine! I'm not big on singing (although I do looooove to grooove and cut up the dance floor) and I'm even smaller on listening to the catwails of my tone deaf wife, Bessie. The woman is 40 years old for crying out loud. I thought these sing-a-long machines were for the young and the even younger-at-heart (and I assure you, Ol' Bess is neither of these, or is she?). What could I do? Sabotage? Destruction? Minor breakage? Would Bessie even be able to set it up (she still can't work the VCR)? What was I to do? A quick look at this machine proved it rather durable and fairly simple to set up--in fact, it was already properly hooked up. Hummmmm.I knew Bessie was out with Chad for his 2-year checkup and I had the house to myself. I powered up the STVG-500: Top Load CDG Karaoke System with 5.5" B/W TV Monitor (by Singing Machine) and was delighted to see the tiny little monitor pulsing and displaying the lyrics to "What A Girl Wants". Naturally, I hate that song, but the only Karaoke cd in the darn thing was "Teenybopper Tunes for True Karaoke Gods". I grabbed the microphone (a very nice professional-looking one) and started crooning. After a minute or so, my body started undulating and my hips and pelvis were doing my best Elvis impersonation. Another minute into the song and I was screeching all about what girls want and what girls need. It was at this precise moment that Bessie chose to walk into the living room carrying a screeching, laughing Chad. If that Old Hen asks me one more time what it is that girls need, I may have to smash the STVG-500: Top Load CDG Karaoke System with 5.5" B/W TV Monitor into 347 pieces. What a nightmare! What to say? This is a durable machine, has decent sound, and can be fun (don't get caught). The monitor is a tad small but makes this system stand-alone (as opposed to hooking up to the television) and that has its benefits. And there are a lot better karaoke cds out there (why, oh why didn't I sing "Witchy Woman" instead???). Ugh.

We got this gift for 8 year old daughter's birthday-We cannot keep her off of it!! She loves singing and plus she is getting in her reading also. Very addictive-we had to purchase extra mic for her brother. lots of fun- we have had no problems with volume or ability to hear her. great value.

Wish I had read some of these reviews. Just purchased this machine from Target on sale for $59.99 (very surprised it is priced so high on Amazon). Anyway, got it home and the microphone doesn't work at all in either Mic 1 or Mic 2. A good friend of mine purchased one of these as well and they had to turn the volume up all the way in order to hear their voices over the music. She took hers back and got a Karaoke machine by Memorex. Can't recommend this one.

I bought a STVG Singing Machine and had to return one plus return the replacement. Tried another in [a local store] same model, tried it right in store before purchase - It did not work so I would not buy it. Huge quantity of these machines being sold at low prices to [local stores] - defective - You cannot record your singing with the microphone. I will not buy a Karaoke mach. unless I try it in the store first to confirm that the machine is free of this defect. This same model STVG-500 is being sold for [$$$] now at [a local store]. A month ago at [another local store]. This item is made in CHINA. My experience sure does not elicit much confidence in the product. I would not recommend The Singing Machine at any price after what I have experienced. Clerks are unaware of this defect in the stores.

I couldn't believe what a value this is.A CD+grahics karaoke machine with 5" black and white monitor tape deck for recording what you sing and playing it back. Plus a built in amplifier and speaker, inputs for 2 mikes! What a deal for under $.... I bought and and was surprised that it was actually made of wood for better sonic quality and not cheap plastic like those ones at the toy stores. This is not a toy, but a real karaoke machine that can be hooked up to a tv set for a bigger and COLOR graphics and lyrics. Also can be hooked up to an external amplifier or stereo. The only thing this machine lacks is a key control and a headphone jack. It does however come with a decent microphone. What a great value!!! So light and portable, for taking to a friends house for a party.

I bought this for my (then) 7-year-old for Christmas last year. She loves to sing and I thought this would be a great & fun way to improve her reading. The machine was fun while it lasted, but within about 6 months the monitor stopped working. Shortly after that, both plastic brackets that hold the microphones were broken off (first one, then the other). Disappointing.

After 2 months the microphone wires just came out. Purchased a new microphone from Radio Shack, then the mic stop working. The company wants me to pay for shipping to send it to them. This machine isn't worth 100+ dollar. DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME!
