This Karaoke machine is not a toy. It is actually a very nice piece of electronic equipment. The sound volume coming out of the enclosed speaker is adequate. This Karaoke machine is not a toy. It is actually a very nice piece of electronic equipment. The sound volume coming out of the enclosed speaker is adequate. There are cables included with this unit that allow you to connect it to your 2000 Watt Sony Sound System so that you can make yourself deaf - just like a real rock star. Like the rest of the reviewers note, there is also a cable to allow you hook the unit up to a TV so that you can see lyrics. But the kid that I bought this for never uses this feature because she knows the words to all of her songs by heart and doesn't need this feature. The included microphone is what I would consider "studio quality" - it is quite sturdy and seems to have a good sensitivity. I'm sure you know, but I'm going to point that you can sing along with ANY audio CD, not just Karaoke CD's. You can also use this machine as a CD player to listen to your CD's, although the one oversight on this unit is that there is no headphone jack for private listening. This device will also work quite well as a portable Public Address (PA) System. Simply turn the music volume all the way down and the microphone volume all the way up. This a very versatile, very well made piece of equipment and it is a tremendous bargain at $51.

3.0 out of 5 stars Our first karaoke machine, could be better, January 7, 2007
This review is from: Singing Machine SMG-137 CD+G Karaoke System (Electronics)
My daughter, 8, received this karaoke machine for Christmas. The first thing she said was "It doesn't show the lyrics like so-and-so's does." Everything works fine on it, but here were two main points that were sort of disappointing: 1. You have to plug the karaoke machine into the TV to get the graphics/lyrics up, and for those of us who still wrestle with a huge tube TV instead of a flat panel, that's sort of a pain because the plug-ins on my TV are in the back. Plus that pretty much monopolizes the living room TV. 2. The microphone isn't very loud at all. I have the mic turned ALL the way up, and to even be able to hear the singer, the music can only be turned up about 1/4 of the way. So there's no rockin' out to be had. My daughter's objective was to have a "rock star room" with a self-contained karaoke center (no TV required) that she could blast the volume and really go for it with her friends. So while everything works, it left us feeling kind of deflated. Again, we're new to karaoke machines so I am unfamiliar still with what features are standard issue, but I do like that you can just listen to CDs on it also. Three stars. If I had to buy another machine, I would definitely choose a different one.

1.0 out of 5 stars Buyers Beware! Within a year, the CD's won't play, November 13, 2008
By
This review is from: Singing Machine SMG-137 CD+G Karaoke System (Electronics)
I have bought 2 of these machines within the last 2 years. The first one I bought stopped playing the CD's within a year. My girls have so much fun with it that I decided to buy another one. I bought the Singing machine for Christmas 2007. The girls loved it again until it just stopped playing CD's again. I contacted the Singing Machine company thinking first off, that it hasn't been a year and second off, this was the second machine I have owned in 2 years and the same thing happened. They gave me some tips and told me that the warranty was only 3 months. That alone should have been a warning to me. They also told me that I could send it in and they would repair it for $45. I could buy a new one for that! Or at least put it towards, a different brand. As much as the kids loved it, I will not buy another one from this company because I feel it is a poorly made machine. Beware!
Anything with only a 3 month warranty should be a big red flag for the consumer!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Value, March 24, 2007
This review is from: Singing Machine SMG-137 CD+G Karaoke System (Electronics)
We ordered the system for our granddaughter's ninth birthday. We could not be more pleased with it. The price was less than what we had expected to buy and the quality was excellent.
Within minutes of opening her package, our granddaughter was able to hook up the system to her TV and was singing along with the music. To say we are pleased with the system is an understatement.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect for my daughter, January 18, 2008
This review is from: Singing Machine SMG-137 CD+G Karaoke System (Electronics)
My 5-year-old got this for Christmas with two Disney Princess singalong CD's - and she loves it. It's not too hard for her to work - she's discovered the "repeat" feature, so she can perfect her "performance." The microphone works without the CD engaged, so she can sing along with other mediums, like the TV or radio. It also has an adaptor for video/audio - so you can plug it into your TV, too, and an extra microphone jack (not included), if you really want them to be able to have duets. This is a good first-timer Karaoke. The volume doesn't go too high - which is perfect, because even if she turns it all the way up, we won't go deaf - but it is loud enough for you to hear and enjoy. It seems durable enough so far - she hasn't managed to break it yet.

1.0 out of 5 stars does not work at all, December 29, 2008
This review is from: Singing Machine SMG-137 CD+G Karaoke System (Electronics)
My wife purchased one of these units before Christmas.
The intent was to use it during a family get together after Christmas.
When it arrived we hooked it up to our home tv, it did not work, the audio was fine but the words on the screen were all garbeled and illegible.
We took it with us the the party anyway, hoping it might work on a different tv.
It didn't, it had no video at all.
While playing around with the cables it was noticed that the unit would work only if the center pin on the RCA plug was touching the outer part of the receptacle on the unit.
In other words the RCA receptacle inside the unit must be wired backwards.
I tried to call the phone number listed in the directions but it was "no longer in service".
Sorry but we would not recommend this unit to anyone

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)

We bought this Karaoke machince originally since there was a lot of positive feedback. Fortunately we opened it a month before Christmas and found out that the CD player can't read any CD's, the microphone doesn't work, and there is a loud humming noise coming from the speakers when it is turned on.

When I came back to this on Amazon I discovered that there were a lot of other buyers that had had this same experience. To have this many defective units shipping is a sign of poor quality. The unit is very lightweight and cheaply built. I would recommend not taking the risk of getting a dud on this machine.

1.0 out of 5 stars Poor customer service with this company, March 21, 2009

I bought this item for Christmas for my children. After threee uses, the microphone made no more sound, so I contacted the customer servie department of the Singing Machine Company. No phone call, because they only respond by email. They told me that it was still under warranty but I had to determine if it was the microphone that wasn't working or the jack on the machine. They told me to plug the microphone into any stereo with a microphone jack. Well this is not easy to do, because very few stereos let you use a microphone. I finally found a friend of a friend who had one and we tried it, and the microphone did not work. So I emailed the company. They told me now I had to prove it also wasn't the jack on the machine, by taking it to a stereo repair shop. They would not pay for shipping or insurance of the karaoke machine unless both the jack and microphone were damamged/broken. If I only sent the microphone and the jack was the problem as well, they wouldn't replace that part or the machine because they only do one exchange per product line. If I sent the machine with the broken microphone, and the machine was not damaged, they wouldn't pay for the microphone replacement because they would have to charge me for their technicians to investigate my machine. So, I go out and buy my own microphone and the machine still doesn't work. Now I tell them that the jack is also broken, and I want to ship everything for a replacement. Well, now I was past my 30 day warranty, so they could not help me. Now I have a wonderful new microphone and a broken Karaoke machine. Horrible Company! Horrible Policies!

1.0 out of 5 stars Bad Customer Service/warranty, May 26, 2008
This review is from: Singing Machine SMG-137 CD+G Karaoke System (Electronics)
We bought the Singing machine for Christmas 2007. The kids loved it until 4 months later when it stopped playing the CD's. NOTE: THE WARRANTY IS ONLY FOR 3 MONTHS!!!!! That alone should have been a warning to me. Anyway, I contacted the company to see if they would provide some good customer service and repair it anyway and they said it would cost $45 to send it in plus shipping cost. In other words almost as much as a new one. As much as the kids loved it, I will not buy another one because I feel it is a poorly made machine. Beware!
Anything with only a 3 month warranty should be a big red flag for the consumer! Purchase at your own risk.
P.S. My kids are very easy on their toys and most look as new after a year of playing with them. There was no damage to the machine.
