3.0 out of 5 stars Typical Love Story, March 10, 2009
By
This review is from: Singing A Song (Indigo) (Paperback)
Darnell Cameron and Thad Stewart could not be more opposite. Darnell was one of the hottest singers out and Thad was a talented comedian/actor. So although they both lived the extravagant life on the outside, they were all too different in reality. Thad was a playboy in the media's eyes, while Darnell has been with her boyfriend for over ten years. A happenstance accident brought them together. Their contempt for each other was visible. Yet the attraction they had was inevitable. Darnell was keeping a secret and Thad would do anything to make it right. Can Darnell let go of total control and open herself to true happiness?

Singing A Song by Crystal Rhodes was a typical love story. The characters were engaging, but the story lacked the spark that gets you going. I waited and waited for the mystery man to come clean or at the very least DO something. It never happened. I think had that part of the plot been developed more, this would have been a much better story. This was my first read for Rhodes. I have read the descriptions for the other stories and they also seem to have the love mystery theme. If you like that genre I think you may enjoy this or some of her others.

3.0 out of 5 stars An engaging love story, January 30, 2009
This review is from: Singing A Song (Indigo) (Paperback)
Darnell Cameron is a superstar recording artist with the "Midas touch"-- she seems to have everything going for her. Thad Stewart is an award winning comedian turned actor and much sought after playboy. When the two of them meet, courtesy of a fender bender, their intense attraction causes a negative reaction, which threatens to land them both in court. Darnell is totally self-reliant and has been hiding a secret for years. Thad is used to the world thinking of him as a playboy, but is disconcerted when he realizes that Darnell believes him to be as shallow as everyone thinks. When Thad unwittingly discovers Darnell's secret, he will stop at nothing to make her his.

In SINGING A SONG, Darnell is a woman who has risen to the top of her field by taking control of her career and everything that impacts it. She is so used to being in control that she refuses to allow herself to believe that she can be happy with someone like Thad. Thad is also in control and at the top of his field, but unlike many of the other self-absorbed people in the industry, he has quietly become one of the top philanthropists in the world; giving his support and his money to many worthwhile causes. Both characters have family and friends who help them see the error of their ways, while supporting them through good times and bad.

SINGING A SONG is set in the California area with a trip to Barbados. It's a moderately paced story involving two people trying to find true love, while living their lives in the public eye. The major problem I had with this story was the fact that there seemed to be a villain that was never really an issue. This unknown threat was lurking in the background, but none of the characters actually had a real encounter with him. When you discover who he is and his connection to Darnell, his entire story line becomes disgusting. I just don't understand how you can have a villain, who never interacts with the main characters until the very end. Thad's ex-girlfriend caused more drama than he did.

Ms. Rhodes has written an engaging love story, but the build up to the villain is anti-climatic at best.

4.0 out of 5 stars (RAW Rating: 3.5) - Meet Me in the Middle, May 3, 2009
By
The RAWSISTAZ Reviewers (RAWSISTAZ.com and BlackBookReviews.net) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Singing A Song (Indigo) (Paperback)
SINGING A SONG is the story of polar opposites, Darnell Coleman and Thad Stewart. We have Darnell, the famous singer, who is looking for her first acting role to propel her career to the next level. Across town is comedian-actor Thad with a hidden talent for writing. When the lives of these two people literally crash together, can their vehicles and their lives be repaired? If they are repaired, will it last? As Darnell and Thad attempt to work through the rubbish of the crash, they are unaware of the danger that surrounds them.

Rhodes takes us on an amazing road trip with stops and detours that will have you holding your breath. The strength, weakness, and fears of the characters are real, with the secondary characters adding their own spice to the story. This story flowed from scene to scene, while keeping you wondering what next? Who is that? Who did it?

Rhodes keeps you changing your opinion, and turning the pages to see if you had come to the correct conclusion. Readers will be shocked as the story draws to an end. SINGING A SONG is a romance with a hint of mystery, secrets, lies, and murder. Rhodes blended these elements together for a great story.
