I love this book!,

This review is from: The Singing Stone (Hardcover)
I loved it because it had everything I enjoy in a book. Adventure, myth, history, legend. It is exciting and definately keeps you interested. The mysterious protaganist, Kay, is strong and independant and you feel for her and her hardships. The twist ending is unexpected and answeres many questions and starts many more, making you wish the book wouldn't stop.I definately recomend this book to anyone who enjoys fantasy and also suggest Melling's other books, The Druid's Tune and The Hunter's Moon.

TERRIFIC FANTASY AND ADVENTURE!,
By Sherry S. Korthals (Vermillion, SD United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Singing Stone (Paperback)
THE SINGING STONE is an extraordinarily well-written fantasy. If you enjoy the works of Lloyd Alexander, Susan Cooper, or Ursula LeGuin, do not miss out on this title! Melling masterfully blends Irish history and legend with daring and adventure to create a fantasy that is rich in detail and beauty. It is the story of two spirited young women--Kay and Aherne--who traverse ancient Ireland on a quest to gather the four treasures of the Tuatha De Danaan. Successful in their venture, they also discover their hidden identities and the true meaning of friendship. The tale, as intricately woven as Louis Sachar's HOLES and E.L. Konigsburg's A VIEW FROM SATURDAY, comes full circle, leaving readers immensely satisfied with its conclusion. A MUST READ FOR FANTASY FANS!

WOW!,

This book was absoutley amazing and probably the best book I have ever read. I really could not put it down. We read it in our English class and I am sure that everyone was truly moved by it. Ms. Melling is a wonderful writer and a wish there was a sequel, because I cried at the end when I turned to the last page and realized it was over. I just didn't want it to end. Everyone should read this book-it's great. And thank-you Ms. Melling for writing such a great story.

One of the best books I've ever read...,
By A Customer
This review is from: The Singing Stone (Paperback)
Whoever "Graham Burton" or whatever his name is is, they've absolutely no ability to grasp concepts! This is a spectacularly interesting book, and, if you thought some of the words in the story were "big" or "hard", I sincerely think you don't have the right to comment about it being stupid. I thought the "game" they played about their inner-most loves was sweet and insightful... Basically, I'm writing this to say what a excellent book this is, as all O.R. Melling's are.

I Didn't Enjoy the Ending,

For a novel study, I was forced into reading "The Singing Stone," by Orla Melling. I thought it would be an excellent book due to the fatasy atmosphere, which I am really in to. Well, as I began to read the book, I believed it ws very good, (hence the 3 stars) but near the end the author of this complicated book seems to have rushed the conclusion of it. ... The last few chapters of the book seem unbelievable and extremely stupid. In conclusion, my expectations of this book, "The Singing Stone" were not met, surprisingly!...

I first read O.R. Melling when I was 10 years old, and she's STILL my favorite author! The Singing Stone was probably the best one. Ever since I read "The Hunter's Moon" I've been in love with Irish mythology. The Singing Stone does a great job at re-creating the time period of the Tuatha de Dannan, a subject rarely (or never!) covered in ya novels! All in all it was a GREAT read!

What can I say - The Singing Stone rules!,

This is the first book I've read by O.R. Melling, and, believe me, it won't be the last! Melling has done a spectacular job of bringing us into Kay's life, and doing something that's impossible in many books - Bringing you closer and closer to the characters until it seems like they're as real as you or me. Once I picked up this book, I found it hard to put down. To anyone thinking of reading this book, DO! You won't regret it!

I was impressed with the way Ms. Melling tied her story in with the history of Ireland. My favorite genre is the historical novel, not usually fantasy, and this fit the bill on both counts! I especially liked the surprise ending! A great adventure and a fun read!

The singing stone is a totally awesome book. When I read it; I laughed, I cried, I was basiclly moved by the whole thing. Once I picked it up, I didn't want to put it down, but it was so good that I didn't want it to end. It is about a girl who was transported through time to help a person who needed help, all the way back in the time of the CELTS. The girl was an orphan and always wanted to know about her past. The person that she had helped in the past, was really her mother.
Father Time had transported her ahead in time, so she could help her mother and her mother's people, who in the time of her mother's youth, were having a very troublesome time.
She helped her mother and father, whose meeting, first date, proposal, and marriage she had got to witness. (Something that not very many people get to see!!), and saved her people from eternal extinction.
I recommend that you read this book, if you are a "FANTASY FREAK". It is a moving book and like all of O.R Melling's other books, is a well wrote, moving book.
