Editorial Reviews

This is the first album by the Gregorian Chant Schola of Saint John's Abbey and University. In hymns, antiphons, psalms, and responsories, the schola sings of John the Baptist who announced Jesus' coming, the Blessed Virgin Mary and Joseph her spouse, the apostles Peter and Paul and the evangelists Matthew and Luke, Benedict and Scholastica and Hildegard, Dominic and Francis.

This CD is lively, and refreshing due to the semiological rendering of the various chants. Vocal quality is pure and truly beautiful – perhaps exquisite? Fr. Anthony Ruff provides us a most enjoyable variety of sound using various resources to include the Antiphonale Monasticum III; Graduale Romanum; and St. Hildegard. The addition of some harmony in organum adds a particular ancient nuance. The mix of voices recalls perhaps the sound in the monasteries of the middle ages when the mixed choirs of monks and boys rendered chant in octaves. I particularly enjoyed #5 “Hodie Sanctus Benedictus” and #16 “O Quam Gloriosum”. Blend and balance is superb throughout the recording. Finally, Fr. Anthony has given us translations of the Latin to add understanding to the beauty of this exceptional and unique recording. I highly recommend it.
