4.0 out of 5 stars Soul-jazz "Gator"-style!, September 25, 2003

This review is from: Single Action (Audio CD)
A solid set with strong contributions from organist Carl Wilson and guitarist Pat Martino, in addition to the leader's honking swagger. Sentimental pop tunes composed by Barbara Streisand-Paul Williams ("Evergreen") and Stevie Wonder ("Sunshine") are uplifted by sensitive, probing interpretations, but the standouts are the hard-driving blues, "Hitting the Numbers" and "Single Action" which features a particularly riveting solo from the "Gator". Get "Bar Wars" first, but get this one next.

Willis "Gator" Jackson - Sax (Tenor)
Pat Martino - guitar
Carl Wilson - Organ
Buddy Caldwell - Conga
Ralph Dorsey - Percussion
Rudy Van Gelder - Engineer, Remixing
Idris Muhammad - Drums
Yusef Ali - Drums
Jimmy Lewis - Bass
