5.0 out of 5 stars stop hating
Farrah not only did a great job acting in this movie, she also did a great job writing and producing it. I didn't expect the twist at the end wow. Unlike most independent movies, the sound was great and the picture was clear. I loved the music that was incorporated into the film. It's great to see black women making moves in Hollywood. I would recommend this movie to a...

1.0 out of 5 stars Awful! Profiling is not acting., February 14, 2009
This review is from: Single Black Female (DVD)
Profiling: the extent to which a person attracts attention

Acting: to take action, to fulfill the function or serve the purpose, to perform a fictional role

Although the lead actress in SBF is attractive I couldn't connect with her character Karma's journey. the screenplay was very weak. the screenwriter(s) didn't know how to keep their interests out of the story and focus on the organic progression of Karma's story.

And the twist was predictable from both the cover art on the DVD and the pacing of the film itself. I was hoping that I was wrong but alas I wasn't.

The stripper club scene was totally unnecessary, it should have been cut from a dismal script. It didn't move the story forward and was weak if it was only justified by Sky's discussion with Karma therein. Question: if Sky didn't have to work why was she holding all that mad loot in the stripper's club like some pimptress? well at least the dudes watching this were probably satisfied.

This film has all the classic signs of poor execution that plagues a great deal of indie black films. primarily the superficial treatment of the characters. profiling has it's place in a nightclub especially when you're sizing up potential temp bed partners over watered down drinks under dim lights and loud music not on a 40 foot screen.

The screenwriters and directors don't allow you to invest emotionally with any of the characters. the scenes with the parade of potential but dismal room mates was far too long. This gag ran through out the film. The music used seemed heavy handed, not organic to the story.

Music videos can tell a compelling story but for the most part they are just vanity creations of the talent. you know, eye candy shots then there are a series of shots of the band and/or singer then back to eye candy shots. these can be entertaining but they aren't films.

films touch you. they provoke your emotions with lights and sound (or lack of sound)

All the techniques used in this extended music video seemed to jar the viewer away from the story.

Finally, the dialogue made me cringe it was so awkward. I could write better dialogue than this. Especially the interaction between Karma and her brother towards the end. The two actors didn't even act so much as they just mouthed those awkward words at each other.

Cursing truly is the sign of limited vocabulary and a poor film. All the males spout the f bombs at the drop of a hat. Then the females characters shout it out to get some potency empowerment. Help!

Black males actors can give a full range of human emotion without curse words as sign posts. Movie goers are not that ignoarant. I wish some black filmmakers would honor our intelligence as an audience especially if they want us to spend two or more hours of our attention on their creations.

Note bene: if these male characterizations were in other hands the taint of limiting stereotyping would be felt.

Clearly the director gave none of his talent direction beyond blocking. B/c I saw hesitancy, awkwardness in the actors actions; no connections between the various actors. I suspect many in this film come from the music world or are family friends of the filmmakers and not professional actors. hope they got paid upfront.

the filmmakers of this jumbled chaos should revisit the first twenty minute of a film like Wall*E. It was an ok film which was able to tell a decent story visually without any dialogue during much of the first half of the film. Another example is an older film Papillon. Once again no dialogue used just visuals that engage the viewer emotionally. Consider even Once Upon a Time In America another classic.

SBF is in company with the disappointing TV show by Joss Whedon, Dollhouse, interesting premise horrible execution.

1.0 out of 5 stars Painful to watch, February 1, 2009
This review is from: Single Black Female (DVD)
I suggest anyone thinking of buying this movie to stop. This is the worst movie I have ever seen. Bad acting, bad writing, the music drives you crazy throughout the entire film. What were they thinking? Its unfortunate because I am a true believer of supporting black films, even if they go straight to dvd. This taught me a lesson. I don't recommend buying it. If you plan to rent it, be prepared to be completely bored.

2.0 out of 5 stars GOOD INTENTIONS WERE STILL NOT ENOUGH!, July 2, 2009
This review is from: Single Black Female (DVD)
I GOT DRAWN IN BY THE TITLE, PLUS THE CURIOSITY OF SEEING FARRAH, THE HOT SECOND MEMBER OF DESTINY'S CHILD ACT. ALL-IN-ALL, IT WAS A LOW BUDGET FILM, THE ENDING WAS THE BEST PART OF THE MOVIE AS THE REST WAS DRAWN OUT AND AT TIMES BORING. OH WELL, ANOTHER BAD PURCHASE!

1.0 out of 5 stars R U SERIOUS???, March 21, 2009
This review is from: Single Black Female (DVD)
I rented this movie from the Redbox with a $1 promo code so it didn't cost me anything but my gas to get to the store and bring this garbage back and about 85 minutes of my life.

I want my dollar that i didn't spend back as well as my 85 minutes. This along with "Park Day" has to be the worst wasted usage of a video camera in the history of movies.

I can't believe Tony Rock agreed to even make a cameo appearance in this. I thought he was a decent actor before I watched this.

The only thing decent about this garbage that they call a movie was that the lead actress had a kute face and nice backside that they should've showed more of.

Please...

I can think of a whole lot more things to do with 85 minutes of your life than watch this crap.

Taking a nap is one of them.

This movie was a generic version of Single White Female, that could have been great. The only horror of this movie was the acting!!!

1.0 out of 5 stars One of the worst movies EVER!, January 28, 2011
This review is from: Single Black Female (DVD)
I only gave it one star because we couldn't leave it blank or I would've not given it any! I NEVER write reviews BUT I HAD to do this one. The acting was bad, writing, plot. It was pretty much predictable. Slim Thug had NO business in here. Cameo for what? She is pretty tho

1.0 out of 5 stars A case for the no-stars or negative-stars option, April 2, 2009
This review is from: Single Black Female (DVD)
I don't usually write DVD reviews, but this is THE WORST movie I have ever had the displeasure of watching. I can't get my time or money back, but maybe I can save someone else from wasting theirs by writing this review. This sucks: plot, acting, production values, the whole nine yards. Run. Run very far away from this tired flick.

1.0 out of 5 stars Horrible...she should have stayed with Destiny's child, March 21, 2009
This review is from: Single Black Female (DVD)
This movie was not worth the $6.00 I paid for it. Ms. Franklin is a beautiful woman, and that's it! She should have taken some acting lessons before trying to pursue an acting career. The movie was really boring, the music came in too loud and the whole cast was terrible, nobody could act! She was supposed to be a singer, but you never heard her sing...how convenient. She should have stayed with Destiny's Child..or maybe not! Maybe she should try modeling.

1.0 out of 5 stars HORRIBLE SCRIPT AND ACTING!, March 17, 2009
This review is from: Single Black Female (DVD)
This movie was probably the worst of any low budget film that I've ever viewed. The acting was atrocious and the script was poorly written. To me it was a poor version and wanna be of "Single White Female". Somebody needs to go back to the drawing board on this one.
