Editorial Reviews

Full title - A Single Girl - The Very Best Of The MGM Recordings. 2002 compilation for vocalist who got her start singing backup for Elvis Presley, Tommy Roe, Bobby Bare, Joe Tex, Percy Sledge & Skeeter Davis. Culled from her time with the MGM label (1966-68) where she had five Top 40 hits ('Born A Woman', 'Single Girl', 'What A Woman In Love Won't Do', 'I Take It Back'), all included here. Great melodic & rhythmic 60s pop, reminiscent of the girl-talk records of the early 60s. Posey went on to have success as a country artist in the 70s. 23 tracks. RPM.

3.0 out of 5 stars The best set so far... Now, where's the box?, February 19, 2004

This review is from: Single Girl: Very Best of Mgm Years (Audio CD)
Sandy Posey has not been well served by the CD market with so few of her MGM, Columbia, and subsequent recordings available. At a time when lesser artists have double and tripple disc anthologies, this expanded version of the American Collectables disc is still a far cry from comprehensive. A new Raven Records (Australia)compilation should add a few more pieces to the puzzle, but a more thorough American set would surely be appropriate and welcome. The sound here is reasonable, although not spectacular, and mostly stereo (as another reviewer noted). The insert information is useful although not particularly detailed. All of the big MGM hits are here, along with some fine album cuts. It still leaves room for much more.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best compilation of Sandy's music yet released, January 29, 2003
This review is from: Single Girl: Very Best of Mgm Years (Audio CD)
Sandy had one big international hit, Single girl, and a few other hits in America, including Born a woman, What a woman in love won't do and I take it back. Later singles failed to make any impact in America or anywhere else. Yet, Sandy should not be overlooked. Among the other songs that she recorded were Shattered (used as a B-side) and Sunglasses (just an album track. Either of these would have made excellent singles and comedienne Tracey Ullman covered both of them in the early eighties. All these tracks, including the failed A-side singles, are included on this wonderful compilation.

Among the other tracks are covers of Satin pillows (Bobby Vinton), Just out of reach (Solomon Burke), Here comes my baby (Dottie West), I'm your puppet (James and Bobby Purify), Don't touch me (Jeannie Seely), Come softly to me (Fleetwoods) and Will you love me tomorrow (Shirelles).

Sandy's voice, like her music, was somewhere in the middle ground between country, pop and soul. Perhaps that was the problem - maybe people couldn't decide what type of singer Sandy really was. As somebody who likes all those forms of music, I don't really care - Sandy made brilliant music, and that's enough for me.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sandy - the under-rated country singer, January 18, 2003
This review is from: Single Girl: Very Best of Mgm Years (Audio CD)
This is just a brilliant collection of songs that are so infectious that you'll be singing along to them very soon.

She has a vulnerable singing voice, which sounds just perfect for these songs. Each one is a gem, but I particularly like "I Take It Back", "Satin Pillows" and "Sunglasses", as well as the title track. However, it is a collection which does not have a track which is anything less than wonderful. The recordings seem so simply put together, with an unfussy production, lovely backing singing and gently played music.

She is, I think, a star - but sadly under-rated.
