5.0 out of 5 stars What a great idea!
The cord-wrapped handle is a great idea, offering more of a real sword-like look as well as a firmer grip. My hands tend to get sweaty and slip around a bit with long practice, particularly with the sealed lacquered finish on most bokken. This wrap really helps (though it needed a touch of glue to get it to stay in place). The two-piece guard design is a nice enhancement...

3.0 out of 5 stars Good bokken can withstand hits
Even if it is not meant for contact, good bokken can withstand hits. I ordered mine from e-bogu and have hit solid ice and trees thousands of times without a single crack in my bokken. It only chipped very slightly when I accidentally rammed it into the asphalt once (which I would expect), but still can withstand getting pounded against trees no problem.

5.0 out of 5 stars What a great idea!, February 12, 2006

The cord-wrapped handle is a great idea, offering more of a real sword-like look as well as a firmer grip. My hands tend to get sweaty and slip around a bit with long practice, particularly with the sealed lacquered finish on most bokken. This wrap really helps (though it needed a touch of glue to get it to stay in place). The two-piece guard design is a nice enhancement too. Though you really don't need the guard at all for many applications it is nice looking and appears stronger than the original. It's still a fairly cheap piece of wood, compared to an ironwood version, but at this price (it was $9.99 when I bought it) you really can't go wrong. A nice enhancement over the basic bokken. Recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent practice sword, March 14, 2006
This review is from: Single 40" Hardwood Datio Bokken Kendo Practice Sword (Misc.)
I'm pretty new to Kendo and this is my first bokken. If you are looking for a sword to spar with, do not buy a bokken. You will break it. They're just heavy sticks afterall. Shinai are better for sparring.

As far as this bokken, I love the cord wrap. I bought 2 of these (one for me, one for my wife) and the wrap on both is very secure; it doesn't move or need glue. The hand protector is a nice touch for some realism if you must have it, but considering that it's only going to be used for solo practice, you don't need it. You can also remove it very easily if you decide you don't want it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice Boken, Nice Price, September 20, 2006

This review is from: Single 40" Hardwood Datio Bokken Kendo Practice Sword (Misc.)
It's a nice boken, it feels nicely balanced, looks good, and has a nice price.

The handle wrap was the main reason for my purchase of this item; it keeps the boken in your hands even if they are sweaty. I was a little wary of the wrapping to come undone, so I just placed a few drops of super glue on the ends and a few of the places in-between, just to make sure it stays in place. It's a good practice sword and it serves its purpose, worth the buy in my opinion.

Another reviewer has stated that his boken broke when it was struck, this may very well be. However, it is not because of faulty craftsmanship, it is because the boken is not meant for contact. It is purely a device to help you hone your sword handling skills without chopping off your arm, which you could do with a real katana.

If you want a contact sword to spar with friends, I suggest getting a shinai. Unlike the boken, a shinai is actually meant for sparring and will not break under normal use.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not sure, October 1, 2009

This bokken has a good feel to it but it's much lighter than the other one that I bought Single 40" Dragon Datio Bokken Kendo Practice Sword.

The guard is nice, but it's not like the one pictured, it is a simple rubber band type that does not extend outwards on to the guard as shown. Also, the color on the one I received is much different. It is darker, like a wooden desk with varnish, but I still like it. Maybe it's just the seller, who knows: [...]

Here are the dimensions, the hilt is 10" (0.25" more than the Dragon bokken), and the blade is 28" (1" less than the Dragon bokken), with an overall length of 38.25" (Dragon bokken is 39", an inch shorter than the advertised length).

If this thing really does break after one hit, then it's clearly poor craftsmanship.

The Bokken arrived well protected and is intact. It feels solid and has a good weight its definitely good for practice I haven't hit anything, neither do I intend to so for impact resistance I can only say it looks like it can take some beating. Blade is 29.5" in length.

5.0 out of 5 stars Samurai practice swords, December 28, 2007
This review is from: Single 40" Hardwood Datio Bokken Kendo Practice Sword (Misc.)
I needed sword props for a school performance project and the items were just perfect for my needs. The swords were more than I expected. The wood finish quality was exceptional, and especially the wrapped cording for the handles. I would recommend this product to others.

When I saw this boken I was worried at first. It looked almost to good and was only $9.99 but when I bought it I noticed off the back that it was better quality then the other bokens I have. its got nice weight and its good for solo practice. Im not sure why people are trying to spar and hit hard objects with it, it will most surely break.

I dont practice Kendo or any martial art. I bought this sword to swing around my house and poke my sister. Its great cuz it looks scary and my sister can't kick me back. I swing this around my neighborhood and bring it on my walks to Micky Ds and Jack in the crack. Neighborhood kids loves my sword and always want to sword fight me with their plastic swords (I always win ofcourse cuz my sword is wooden and awesome). Im a professional photographer by day and so sometimes i bring this to my model shoots and wack my models if they don't behave, again it works great because it looks scary and they cant kick me back.

I would recommend this sword to everybody. Im buying my grandma one of these to replace her walking stick.
