3.0 out of 5 stars (RAW Rating: 3.5) Single Mama with More Drama, August 19, 2008

This review is from: Single Mama Drama (Paperback)
Vanessa Cain had no clue that the man she was engaged to was already married, but when the former pro football player, Eli, is killed alongside his mistress, Vanessa soon finds that her life is about to get complicated. Vanessa and her three-year-old daughter are facing eviction from Eli's widow unless she can come up with the money to buy the condo. Vanessa digs up her past boyfriends to see who she can borrow the money from, but decides she wants to try to do things on her own. She steps up her game at the motivational speaking agency she works for by trying to bring in a huge client, but Vanessa finds herself dealing with a lot more drama than she bargained for.

SINGLE MAMA DRAMA was an enjoyable read. It dealt with the issue of women raising children on their own and trying to find that balance between being happy in a relationship and being a mom. In this case, there were many factors that fought against what Vanessa was trying to build for herself and her daughter.

I like Kayla Perrin's style of writing and have read several of her books. Although she draws you into Vanessa's life from page to page, some of the chapters were a little confusing as it switched from character to character. More confusing was where Rayna's father, all of a sudden shows up in the book and turns Vanessa's life upside down once again. Another confusing aspect was where Vanessa's co-worker takes her out to lunch and decides she wants something unexpected. These two characters came into the story all of a sudden without any precursor. Overall, I enjoyed the book. I am looking forward to reading the sequel that is sure to follow.

2.0 out of 5 stars Single Mama Drama doesn't hold up!, August 11, 2008
This review is from: Single Mama Drama (Paperback)

Although the character of Vanessa Cain was likeable, I was very confused as to the character's motivations. After her fiancee Eli is murdered while having sex with a married woman, Vanessa grieves for a hot minute and then moves on to motivational speaker Chaz. Despite the fact that Chaz is fine and rich, it seems implausible that any woman could move forward so quickly after the love of her life is murdered. When I got to the end of the book I was very unhappy to discover and incomplete and unsatisfying ending. While sequels are great, this book ended in such a way that I almost resent the author's dangling another book over the reader's head. Do I care enough about Vanessa to read the sequel? Not particularly. Also, book was way too long.

Miami single mom Vanessa Cain feels she has finally found her Mr. Right in former Atlanta Braves player Eli Johnson; they are engaged to marry although they had a fight over spilled milk. However, the office manager of Believe the Dream, Change Your Life agency soon learns the hard way that she once again gave her heart to a loser. CNN reports that the still married Eli was killed by Conrad Redgrave, husband of his lover Alyssa; the cuckold spouse confessed he shot and killed the paramours with a single arrow as they were having sex in his bed.

That was bad enough with the media in frenzy mold. However, Eli's legal widow Tassie demands Vanessa vacate the condo she shared with her daughter Rayna and the late athlete as she says it is at least half hers since the divorce was never finalized. Needing to escape the media frenzy and the vindictive wife, Vanessa heads to the Bahamas on business in an attempt to persuade highly regarded motivational speaker Chaz Anderson to join her agency. They hit it off, but she does not trust her fickle heart to finally find the right man for her.

This is an enjoyable contemporary romance starring a very deep lead female character who makes mistakes in judgment, but refuses to give up on her self and on life. Chaz is a nice person and Rayna provides child support to the story line, but as the title states this is a SINGLE MAMA DRAMA.

2.0 out of 5 stars Let Down!, January 6, 2008
This review is from: Single Mama Drama (Paperback)
I'm surprised that this book turned out the way it did. I have read books by Kayla Perrin before and I must say she did NOT do her best when writing this one. It started off OK, the middle was even OK (when Vanessa was dating Chaz)but after that ??????????? and Vanessa's character with men?????????

3.0 out of 5 stars Single Mom Celebration or Therapy???, January 1, 2008
This review is from: Single Mama Drama (Paperback)
Well, I have been following Ms. Perrin for a bit - this latest book is VERY confusing!!! Vanessa has been duped - okay that happens but Vanessa also introduces her daughter Rayna (age two) to her men too soon for my comfort! The other female characters in the book are having affairs, being stalked by ex-spouses and the ending sounds like a sequel waiting to happen... As a long time successful single mom - there were very few senarios in this book that I could relate to - Ms. Perrin - you may contact me ANYTIME as a consultant for the sequel!!! This book left too many insues unanswered and the plot was a bit all over the place...

4.0 out of 5 stars If you like drama, this book has it, February 22, 2011

This review is from: Single Mama Drama (Paperback)
This book had me from the very beginning. The best way to describe Single Mama Drama is a train wreck. I was screaming at Vanessa, telling her to get her head out of the sand. I found myself talking to my friends about her as if she was real. Some people say that this book was somewhat irritating but, I found it entertaining. Some of the story was over the top. Vanessa was naive almost to the point of stupidity but, again I loved it!!! She had a very real quality to her. Great quick book...

3.0 out of 5 stars You'd Need A Drink Too!, June 29, 2010

Vanessa's life is shattered when her fiancé, retired NFL star Eli Johnson, is brutally murdered in the arms of another woman, literally. As if that isn't bad enough, it is soon revealed that Eli is actually still legally married to his ex Tassie although they have been separated for almost eight years. Bitter Tassie plays the part of a deeply in love and grieving widow seemlessly and takes advantage of the fact that she is technically Eli's widow. She does her best to take Vanessa and Eli's shared condo as well as smear Vanessa's name in the media, portraying her as an evil, home wrecking and gold digging, mistress. Vanessa is shocked, heartbroken, and mortified to say the least, but being a mother she has to put that to the side and think of her small daughter, and refuses to give up her daughter's home without a fight.

As sorry as I feel for Vanessa, this single mother has a lot of growing to do. All the drama she encounters is directly linked to her being a serial dater and jumping to the next man as soon as her flavor of the month or current relationship fails. She has a bad habit of choosing the wrong men and should instead really focus on creating balance for herself and young Rayna rather than chaos. Most women encounter a bad guy or two in their lifetimes but that seems to be all Vanessa dates. . . until she meets famous motivational speaker Chaz Anderson that is. An opportunity of a lifetime presents itself along with her first real shot at the ideal romantic relationship. They move incredibly fast and fall in love over the course of one weekend. Again Vanessa never thinks twice about introducing yet another man to her daughter, although Chaz is concerned about confusing little Rayna. It seems that Vanessa has finally landed the perfect man, but that too is in jeopardy when Rayna's deadbeat father shows up out of thin air demanding to see his daughter. This woman can't seem to avoid the drama, and reaches for a glass of wine whenever things get tough, but I guess we can't really blame her.

This novel is particularly long winded and a bit boring here and there. I suspect most of that is due to the fact that the author jumps ahead only by minutes or hours not days or longer. A story can become tedious to read when following one character every second of their life while impatiently anticipating the pending drama to explode and then resolve. Following Vanessa's love life, her horrendously negative sister, and her coworkers drama is a bumpy ride worth every second!

2.0 out of 5 stars DISAPPOINTED, December 30, 2007
This review is from: Single Mama Drama (Paperback)
I have read all of Kayla Perrin books and must say that this was by far the worst. The title of the book has nothing to do with the contents in the book. Unfortunately, it was about one break up after another in about a six-week time frame. The ending was brainless... I guess this was supposed to set you until the sequel but why bother because the book was very disappointing. What happened to the other family that experienced the drama in the beginning??? Thanks for a return policy because that's where it's headed back on the shelf.
