I have several books & documents outlining the steps to produce a single shot receiver from steel. Most include blue prints, production tips, machine alternatives and material specifications. This book included all of the above. My goal was to acquire plans & associated detail to produce a handsome receiver which would handle 6, 6.5 & 7mm cartridge pressures. The authors provided great detail but the final product did not have the aesthetic I was after. It would be a fine selection if you want to do some layout and machining, then see your work in action shooting low/mid pressure cartridge such as a .223rem or 22 hornet. The book is easy to read, with good plans and photos. The book offers the reader 2 choices of receiver design; Vault lock (.223 etc) and Chicopee (rimfire).

If you're interested in how rifles are built, this is the book for you!! Well written text, and enough illustrations to carry his point, this book is great educational material for the casual hobbist, or the serious home machinist who wants to produce his own rifles. The book contains instructions for 4 different rifles, from 22 long rifle to the 30-06, and can be modified to nearly any cartridge in between. Great reading on what capable minds can produce!!!

A much better book than the Mueller. The de Haas's have laid out in beautifully clear, step-by-step directions how to build an action using only the tools found in a well-equipped garage. There are four different actions and while the first two would be challenging to build without a mill or lathe, either of the other two can be made if you have a decent drill press. Welding is recommended but if you choose your caliber carefully, not required. A splendid guide.
