Book Description

July 18, 2003
Single String Studies Volume One is an excellent learning tool for both the beginner who has no experience reading music on the bass guitar, and the advanced student looking to improve their ledger line reading and general knowledge of each string of the bass. Each exercise concentrates a students attention of one string at a time. This allows a familiarity to form between the written pitch and where it can be found on the bass along with improving one's "feel" for jumping linearly across the fretboard.

"Follow Arnold's tips, and you'll be reading like a pro in no time." -- Guitar Player Magazine December 2000

From the Publisher

Practicing is more productive and far more fun when you have the help of a tireless friend; in this case your computer. These books are the first of their kind, using the internet as a teaching tool. All the written exercises provided have audio counterparts which can be downloaded from the Internet. Mr Arnold has taught at some of the most prestigious universities in the world, and these books are the result of seventeen years of experience. He has observed his student's most common musical problems, elicited their input, and the results are the Bruce Arnold Series of Music Workbooks, addressing both harmonic and rhythmic issues. These books are geared to the seriously dedicated musician, whether beginning or professional, and will provide a lifetime's worth of study and inspiration.

We are very excited about Mr. Arnold's innovative instruction series. We believe that this series of books will help more students and professional musicians to perfect their technique and reading skills through the use of an interactive "practice partner." We know of no other books to compare with them; they are truly a teaching method for the New Millennium!

2.0 out of 5 stars Underwhelmed, October 21, 2010

I considered giving this 3-stars, but then thought about how disappointed I was with it. I'm already a good bassist, but wholly dependent on chords or play-by-ear. I wanted this for my son and me to learn a technique I was lacking. Unfortunately, the etudes just toss you in without any progressive steps. That's not a way to learn to sight-read. I parked the book on a shelf and put together something better, longer and progressive in methodology using Finale. I didn't give it 1-star because, well, it wasn't truly awful

3.0 out of 5 stars A Good Idea., January 15, 2007

Working on a single string is a great idea and should be a part of the bassist's practice routine. The fact that this book does not have any technique recommendations or illustrations is a flaw that most bass books share, which is unfortunate for the beginner.

Before working through this book and I think that it would be a good idea to wire the circle of 5ths/4ths on a single string. This is a relatively quick way to memorize the first 12 fret positions on each string.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not worth it, September 9, 2006
By
Steve B. (Los Angeles, CA USA) - See all my reviews
I purchased two Bruce Arnold books and both are very disappointing. First issue is the books are about 1% explanation and 99% redundant pages of the exercise in all keys. His idea of working on reading notes on a single string is a good idea. Trying to find the notes without looking cool. His way of doing it in his exercises make no sense. You now know the premise write your own exercises and save your money.
