Editorial Reviews

The award winning film, Single Tracks, fills an empty niche in the growing narrative of Gay and Lesbian cinema through its depiction of a family bridging the gap between the straight and gay worlds. Many films have deepened our understanding of the coming out story, while narrowly focusing on the drama surrounding the gay protagonist. Little time has been spent on the 'unwilling co-pilot' or straight spouse who is brought along on the emotional roller coaster.

An estimated 2 million families in the U.S. have at least one spouse who identifies as lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgendered. As the gay spouse comes out of the closet, the straight spouse finds themselves inside the closet. Single Tracks gives a voice to the all too often silent spouse, and gives gay spouses a reference for how living one's truth, even painful truths, can bring closure.

After 7 years of marriage, best friends An and Elena hit a major pothole when Elena reveals that she is gay. This unexpected realization knocks them both off their feet and spirals them into examinations of themselves, their relationship, and love in general. They explore other relationships while trying to determine where they now fit into each other's lives. Through conversations with each other and friends, bizarre first dates, and surprising new love interests, An and Elena find their off-center new relationship can somehow endure. Shot with the backdrop of Utah's many landscapes, An and Elena's journey turns tragic comedy into a hopeful love story.

I happened to catch this intimate film at the Park City Film Festival this year. The premise is very interesting: how do you live on as friends after a break up which is really, nobody's fault?

While the female character discovers she's gay 7 years into her marriage, I found the lessons learned by this couple applicable to my own marriage which ended in divorce. Just because you grow apart doesn't mean you stop loving one another.

The film is small, personal and has very important message: tolerance, not only of others, but I think, also tolerance of yourself. Sometimes we have to accept that bad things happens and it's really, nobody's fault.

This is a less than happy love story that makes us as a society look at how we judge others. It really makes us think about how our views are projected onto others lives. Good story line and funny, you will like this movie. View it with friends and then get a chat going.
