Single-use Single-variable Calculus Textbook,

This review is from: Single Variable Calculus: Concepts and Contexts (with Tools for Enriching Calculus, Interactive Video Skillbuilder CD-ROM, and iLrn Homework/Personal Tutor) (Hardcover)
The examples in this book are insufficient both in quantity and quality. Stewart only uses one basic example problem for most of the topics and leaves you to figure out advanced concepts by yourself.
When taking Calc II, I was forced to supplement the inadequate help offered by the poor examples of this book with other textbooks and frequent Google searches. This book was definitely not worth the exorbitant amount of money for the few times that it was actually useful.

I've been swamped with homework in general, and have been behind in many classes. So, often times I won't have the foundations to understand the current concept my calc teacher is explaining in class. However, with this calc book, the explanations are so clear, and the in-text examples and practice problems so plentiful, that I can truly say I'm confident in my calculus skills, even without any teacher instruction.
Which isn't to say you should [AP] advanced procrastinate like I'm doing right now. But.. It's really a superb book, and possibly my favorite HS/technically college-prep textbook ever. The only downside, though, is the online supplementary material doesn't seem to work for me no matter what I do. Maybe it needs teacher intervention for things to show up? It seems like it'd be a great source of extra problems, but all I can seem to find are flash videos for a couple sections a chapter. Oh well. But again, this text really makes me happy. Get it, it's def worth your time, and a spot on your bookshelf.

I am taking Calc II and am using this book. This book is horrible! I missed a lecture and when I tried doing the homework I got stuck. There are no example like the examples. I am here on this site to buy companion book so that I can do better on my homework. I wish they would stop using this book at university level courses.

This book sucks for the beginning calculus student, what else can I say? Calculus is a magical, wonderful subject that should be explained by those philo-sophias who want as many others as possible to become one with the subject, too, and explained not by some egotistical maniac who takes glee in quashing the freshman spirit.
Read some other books and commentary on James Stewart. Read his own supplement in which he puts down calculators and computers, staunchly defending his everlasting superiority in crunching numbers. LOL! He is the epitome of the eggheaded scholar that couldn't teach his way out of a bag. Too bad his books propagate this pedagogical joke of a professor.

Low quality calculus text,

Calculus texts seem to have lost its rigorous approach to mathematics. The best book on the market to actually learn Real calculus is Calculus Volume I by Tom M. Apostol. James Sewert's book lacks proofs and examples. I think if you're going to pay top dollar for a math book it should have at least tons of examples as well as tons of problems to solve that will actually help the student in his/her studies in more advanced topics in math or science. My Calculus II professor even hated this book due to its lack of quality. I think publishers should try to publish higher quality books over time rather than pretty pictures of the same material to just force the schools to change over and collect the money. I would pick up Apostol's book to accompany this book in the studies of mathematics.

Thanks for this purchase. Im sorry I forgot to write you a review. As you can see I ordered a Calculus book, so that takes a lot of my time on top of taking 22 credit hours. Wish me luck!

A good buy at a decent price. Some of the pages were stained with grease, but nothing too bad. I would consider this seller for more transactions.

I taught this class with this book several times, and it makes the material more difficult for students. It is one of the worst textbooks available for Calculus.
