This text is a good companion to the textbook. Starting with the early chapters, it explains every problem in great detail. Many of the problems are often accompanied by word explanations, which make things easier to understand. This textbook was my first calculus book and this companion helped me to understand calculus much better. There were two things I didn't like about this book. 1) It contains the answers only to the odd problems. 2) When you get to the later chapters in the book, it often skips algabraic steps leaving you with wonder as to how a certain step was reached. Even though it has these two flaws, it will generally help you out a lot if you are new to calculus

3.0 out of 5 stars Beware!, February 1, 2006
It is a great addition to simply looking at the back of the book for the answers, and eases the learning process as you look through the problems. I would suggest that you get a math teacher to clarify any confusions you might have rather than rely entirely on this solutions manual because although it is helpful, I found it to be only a complement to the assistance of a human being.

There is one major flaw with this book. It does not contain solutions beyond chapter 12, so if you are planning to stop studying calculus midway, it is great. But who stops midway?!!! I am not sure where you can find the solutions manual for the rest of the book(perhaps it doesn't exist), but I caution you to buy this book thinking that it will give you all the answers(no pun intended).

1.0 out of 5 stars This is a turkey, but it's the only one out there., September 22, 2001

This is a lousy solutions manual. It frequently skips steps and gives you no indication that it did - you're left saying "Where the heck (or something more colorful) did that come from?" After lots of beating your brains out, you might be able to figure it out if you're good at this or if you have a great teacher. If not, don't expect this manual to be a good learning tool - it isn't. You can use it to check the answers on homework, but that's almost all. And since the answers are in the back of the book, why bother? And the Teacher's Manual isn't any better, just more of it. Of course, the book's no prize, either. You might want to sign up for a math section that uses a different book!
If you know you're going to need help, save the $40 for this book and pay a tutor instead.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not a good solutions manual!!, August 8, 2010
As with most "official" solutions manuals, this one is pretty much junk. It contains "full" solutions to only odd problems, and those "full" solutions generally skip steps, assume that you've already mastered the concepts (which you obviously haven't at this level), and on occasion, don't even solve problems the way the book recommends. Instead of purchasing a solutions manual for this Calculus book, I'd just recommend using Cramster. For free they've got AWESOME solutions to all odds which clearly explain what's going on, and for ten bucks a month they got you covered on all the evens as well. For some reason this site is not as well-known as it should be, but save yourself some money and headaches and check it out before buying crappy solutions manuals. Just use your favorite search engine for Cramster, it's one decision you won't regret!

5.0 out of 5 stars Use wisely, June 13, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
When I was reading reviews for this several people complained that the problems and sections do not match up correctly. This is true. The math book this is based on has several versions and things keep getting moved around. The farther you get along in the book, the more that becomes apparent.

But. By checking the index, you can always find the section you need. And by scanning up and down the list of problems they solve, I was usually able to find a problem close enough to what stumped me to help me figure it out. If you want someone to do your thinking for you, don't bother. If you want an extra boost in understanding without the help of extra tutoring, this is perfect.

4.0 out of 5 stars The reason I'm doing well in Calculus, October 4, 2008

This book is worth its weight in gold. Because my professor is not a very good one, I'm having to teach myself a lot of what we are doing. I could not have made it this far without this manual. If you get stuck doing problems without it, you are just that: stuck. It has all of the worked out problems and answers to all of the odd numbered questions, and although some steps are not shown occasionally, , 95% of them show all you need to see. I will definitely be purchasing the Multivariable manual when I take Calculus 3 next semester, as this one only covers Cal 1 and 2 (through Chapter 12 I think).

This review is from: Single Variable Calculus (Student Solutions Manual) (Paperback)
If you're buying this manual then chances are that you aren't stopping at Calculus III. This book DOES NOT include chapters beyond 12, so if you're seeking help in Calculus III, you won't find it here.

1.0 out of 5 stars Does not match the Textbook, October 15, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This solution book does not match the textbook they sell in the online and it does not include the problems but only have textbook's page and problem's number that it is totally useless. Only if you have matching textbook then you can buy it otherwise do not buy it. I returned it right after I received it three weeks ago but I still did not get credit. Again, Do not buy it unless you are absolutely sure you have matching textbook.

4.0 out of 5 stars Helpful, August 1, 2008
Although it contains only the odd numbered problems, this Solutions Manual is helpful in solving similar problems without having to go to the instructor all the time. It is also helpful when studying for semester finals. It only has solutions through Chapter 12 of the 18 in the book - enough to get you through Calculus I and II.

4.0 out of 5 stars It's worth it, August 3, 2004

This review is from: Single Variable Calculus (Student Solutions Manual) (Paperback)
The bottom line is, this book you will cut your study time down to just a few hours a week. Calculus is tough no matter how smart you are, and nothing that deals with calculus walks in baby steps. The reality is that the solutions in this book will make life a little easier for calc students.

This book covers both Calculus I and Calculus II from its respective text book. Some explanations are great, others are lacking. I found this book to be particularly useful for problems which require some "trick" that you would otherwise never know about. I used this book for both Calc I and II, and it helped me with every problem I faced. By my estimation, if you buy this book and it saves you a few headaches, it was probably worth it.
