5.0 out of 5 stars A Must For A Mobile Disc Jockey, March 9, 2000

This review is from: Top Pop Singles, 1955-1996 (Joel Whitburn's Top Pop Singles (Cumulative)) (Paperback)
This book has proven to be an extremely valuable tool for me... I own a Bay Area DJ company, and while I'd love to tell you I know the name and artist of every song realeased, it's just not true. With this book, the info is at my fingertips. If a song has "charted" in the Hot 100 singles chart from '55 - '96, it's in the book. I'm anxious for the author to update the book to the present day. I seriously use this book all the time, and if you're "in to" music at all, it's great to have around. Songs are listed by name in the back of the book, or you can look songs up by the Artist(s) who released them. You can learn when it charted, how high it reached on the charts, and what an artists biggest hits have been. At the risk of being sacreligious, this book is known as the "DJ's Bible".

For anyone who loves Rock'N'Roll music, this is a "MUST HAVE" book. I bought one for myself and a good friend liked it so much that I gave it to him and am now purchasing another one for myself. This book has a hugh variety of info on the artists as well as the songs, and will provide many years of enjoyment.

This review is from: Top Pop Singles, 1955-1996 (Joel Whitburn's Top Pop Singles (Cumulative)) (Paperback)
I'll never forget my introduction to Joel Whitburn's "Top Pop Singles" book back in 1984. It was my first radio job, at KAAY in Little Rock, and we'd just started an "oldies" format, one of the first in the country to play just '50s, '60s, and '70s rock music. This book was indispensable when it came to not just adding more songs to the format, but for informational use on the air as well. I purchased my own copy of this book about 10 years later, and now, almost 15 years after that, I've updated again. Granted, I could've spent more money and updated into the new millenium, but for my purposes, through 1996 was more than sufficient, as I currently put together an oldies/classic rock show for a small station in Harrison, AR, and don't play anything past the end of the '80s. Also, a newer version was going to put me at $50 or better, and I'm pretty damn cheap. In addition, this newer version lists the b-sides of the hits, which really comes in handy for me, as I quite often do a segment of "favorite b-sides," the flip sides of the singles that I owned as a kid and quite often played, regardless of whether or not that flip side ever ended up charting. I can't imagine any program director who plays older music doing an effective job without this bible of music at his or her disposal, much less anyone who puts together a show similar to mine.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best of the best, July 19, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Top Pop Singles, 1955-1996 (Joel Whitburn's Top Pop Singles (Cumulative)) (Paperback)
This book covers the top 100 singles which means you won't find much local stuff (get bubbling under for that) but if yo want to know song titles, artists and the date of popularity this book is the bible. I have been a fan of this book since 1972 and buy each new edition.
