Excellent singles and b-sides, November 26, 2003
This review is from: Singles Box (6 CD5) (Audio CD)
The Nirvana Singles Box is by far the best way to obtain the b-sides to all of Nirvana's singles (and let's not forget the great singles themselves). The singles featured are all from Nevermind and In Utero, and they are:
1. Smells Like Teen Spirit
2. Come As You Are
3. Lithium
4. In Bloom
5. Heart Shaped Box
6. All Apologies/R*pe Me
As great as the singles are, the real reason you'll want this is for the b-sides, which consist of demos and live recordings.
Among these b-sides are "Even In His Youth," one of Nirvana's lost songs (and also one of the best), the demo version of "Aneurysm," which features one of Kurt's best primal screams in the break before the bridge, the six-and-a-half-minute noise fest "Endless, Nameless," aka the hidden track on Nevermind. While I'm on the subject, I should point out that "Endless, Nameless" is a huge enticement to buy this collection, since it is no longer on newer pressings of Nevermind for some reason (I've had two copies in the past five years, and neither of them had it).
"Marigold" is interesting since it features a rare, pre-Foo Fighters lead vocal from Dave Grohl, and "MV" is just plain hilarious. Even during all the turmoil surrounding the band during In Utero, "MV" proves that Kurt still had his patented sense of humor. Oh, and the live versions of "Drain You," "School," "Polly," "Been a Son," and "Sliver" are great illustrations of the immediacy that Nirvana brought to their live performances.
This collection is a must for anyone wanting to dig deeper than Nevermind and In Utero. In fact, many of the songs here are just as essential as their album tracks. If you do buy this, though, be sure to buy it used, because new copies are fairly pricey.
Final verdict: Essential listening, and a must have for Nirvana fans.

Coming from an honest Nirvana Die Hard Fan, October 4, 2004
This review is from: Singles Box (6 CD5) (Audio CD)
Trust me i know what i'm talking about.
Reasons NOT to buy this box:
You can buy most of the singles in this box off amazon for about 7$
This box is missing 3 singles that come to mind. Sliver, With a dive (live) b-side, (it's annoying to go get this) Pennyroyal Tea (because this is not in this box it has gone out of production so the price for this has risen dramatically, on ebay you may find it for 20 US dollars if you're lucky. This includes the I hat myself and i want to die demo)
And the Jesus Lizard split single Oh the guilt (nirvana) and Puss (Jesus Lizard). Oh the guilt reached #9 on the UK charts, and now. you have to buy it seperatly from all the other hits.
And that the new box With the lights out is coming out, and will have the b-sides (probably) and more stuff.
Reasons TO buy this box:
None come to mind besides the fact that according to me every song on here is great. The b-sides include some masterpieces of Nirvana's work. If you're not after the b-sides, go buy the greatest hits, and get the singles on one album and more.

I don't own it, but I'm buying it., January 31, 2001
This review is from: Singles Box (6 CD5) (Audio CD)
I respect the Nirvana fan who would rather listen to 'Even In His Youth' two hundred times in a row, then hear the overplayed 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' just once. If you are a Nirvana fan, buy this. If you are a punk or alternative fan, buy this. If you want to stop world famine or swim the English Channel, do those things and then buy this.
