5.0 out of 5 stars A good SP starter CD, September 27, 2001
By
Chris (West Jordan, UT United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Singles Collect (Audio CD)
This CD is great for those who are wondering what SP is all about. The selection of songs is good, but it definately doesn't showcase any of their more challenging work. Unlike other reviewers, I actually love the inclusion of the remixed Worlock and Far Too Frail. If you're new to the band, this is a great start. Older fans will have all of these songs already, but it's still a nice compilation of some of their more accessable songs. Check out the B-Sides compilation or pick up Too Dark Park to see what kind of brilliance SP is truly capable of. Besides, it has "Killing Game" which is possibly the greatest song ever written, by ANY band!

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant Music, November 13, 2004
This review is from: Singles Collection (Audio CD)
I will rate this CD based on music, not how it relates to other CDs. This CD is filled with brilliant music. Everyone will have a different opinion on the song choices. However, there are many songs that everybody can agree on. I would prefer the regular version of Worlock and I often find myself skipping Censor, and Tin Omen. Other than that I think the song choices are great. This CD provides solid 70 minutes of music. I absolutely love it. It is obviously useless to buy it if you own many SP CDs. It is a great starter CD, and it offers a very broad choice of songs instead of one particular style.

However, it's called the Singles Collection and it has no Chainsaw!

4.0 out of 5 stars good songs, though better inside the albums, March 28, 2001
This review is from: Singles Collection (Audio CD)
I used to abhor Skinny Puppy; now I love it. Radical change, it's true. When I listen to this collection of singles I realise of two things: 1st, that Puppy have composed really good songs. 2nd, that I prefer listening to them inside their original albums, they sound better in a context. I would recommend 'Too Dark Park' or 'Bites' to commence with, and then 'Last Rights' or 'VIVISectVI' to get immersed in their difficult works of arts. Cos Skinny Puppy is art, and a very good one. This collection contains some of the best Puppy songs from 'Remission' to 'Last Rights', if it's true that some marvellous songs are missing (obviously since they're not singles: 'VX Gas Attack, Revenge's Nature, Mirror Saw, Amnesia...) But here there're the most representative songs by SP. From the marvellous 'Testure' (the 1st Puppy song I loved), through the effective 'Tormentor', or the agressive 'Spasmolytic', the mesmerising tune of 'Assimilate' (maybe their first master song), or the chaotically beautiful 'Killing Game' (maybe my favourite song ever by any band.) Not to speak to the classic 'Worlock', the strange 'Censor' or 'Inquisition'. This collection is recommended to: 1) those who would like to listen to the most direct (not necessarily the best) songs by SP. 2) those who don't want to spend much money on 9 magnificent albums. 3) those who are afraid of entering the challenging darkness of the music of a band which is among the 2 or 3 best electronic-industrial bands (or call it what u like) But I insist, this collection, while being formed by some of the best Puppy songs, don't fully represent the complex music they created throughout 12 years and 9 works (3 or 4 masterpieces, the rest simply good: they have not a bad album, except 'Rabies' in mmy opinion, which is not exactly bad but I don't consider it good enough for Skinny Puppy) These singles are very good, anyway, even though they sound out of context.

4.0 out of 5 stars Here's the skinny...., May 28, 2003

Who cares what's missing. This is a great collection of 15 remastered singles. If your looking for your first SP disc, this would be a good one. Skinny Puppy is more kin to Front 242 or early Thrill Kill Kult, than say NIN or Ministry. Yet different from them all. If you already have some SP, it's still cool to have this. I've had a few of their albums through the years, but if I only kept one, it would be this singles collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars If you liked this, then buy the rest, DANGIT!!, October 2, 2002
This review is from: Singles Collection (Audio CD)
alright...the tracks are all great...i don't know if i can agree with anyone who calls a song on here fillers, because the truth is this: they make their stuff and under the right *influences* you can see where their minds were when they made their music....some good songs that i wish were on here but weren't were nature's revenge, chainsaw, convulsion, mortar, death, tormentor...though i understand you can only put so much on a cd...

to get a decent grasp on what skinny puppy is, you have to listen to it a couple times, develop an opinion, then get *under the influence*, listen to it again...keep it on repeat, lol, and then change your opinion, because by then, you will say wow, and cry...they are a beautiful band....

one more thing...if you like killing game the most, then you are in the wrong genre...skinny puppy is happy, sad, funny, and frightening all at the same time....killing game is at most two of those and so i encourage everyone to seek what true beauty is...

take care

4.0 out of 5 stars Nettwerk Release = Not Essential But Necessary Compilation, November 18, 2006
This review is from: Singles Collection (Audio CD)
When It comes to Skinny Puppy, I get a little personal! They are certainly the biggest influence to my work as a writer.

This is not the set that the band would prefer I am very sure...

The big plus: All these tracks are re-mastered. For purists this is a nice gesture. We are still waiting for the albums to all get that touch.
The huge let down is the edit of Dig It, wow how I hate this version. The build up to the cataclysmic vocal peak is just lopped off. Even a remaster of the Video Version would have been better fit for this mix up of singles. I prefer the album version of Worlock but it is fine that this version appears. Honestly Nettwerk did a better job compiling the B-Sides Collection.

I wouldn't recommend this to a starter fan. See: VIVI sect VI, Too Dark Park, Last Rights, Greater Wrong Of The Right. Their efforts are meant to be heard in album form.

5.0 out of 5 stars A collection of the dance floor hits, October 17, 2003
This review is from: The Singles Collect (Audio CD)
This is a great release if your looking for a good collection of Skinny Puppy dance floor hits, it doesn't have all of them but its a great start if your new to Skinny Puppy.

If you are a goth/industrial dj and you don't own this then your club patrons are missing out! This is by no means the best Skinny Puppy cd out there but it is packed with tracks that will pack your floor. Not a bad song on this entire disc!

I highly recommend if you are new to Skinny Puppy and you enjoy this release to check them all out, these guys are one of the best industrial related bands out there, then and now!

Ok look this CD is great for starting to get into SKinny Puppy It not not only some of the best songs they did but also you can see how the band progressed through the years and sort though and find the time that you can get other CD's from that era I personally like the rabbies album. But this is all around the best CD you can find for a broad spectrum of Skinny Puppy

5.0 out of 5 stars Captured Skinny Puppy at their best, June 20, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: The Singles Collect (Audio CD)
This cd is my favorite Skinny Puppy album. Although I had most of the songs on other Skinny Puppy cd's this is still a treasure with amazing lyrics. I recommend this to anyone who's a fan of industrial or gothic music.

5.0 out of 5 stars brap this!, February 16, 2000

If you are a fan of MUSIK, you need this cd! I was an owner of two sp cds prior to making this purchase, Too dark park and Last rights, but with this cd, i found a new hunger to get all of these guy's cds. SP is brilliant, just freaking brilliant. From the dark, melancholy yet dancy beats of worlocked, to the stomp and romp rivet dance of Assimilate, this cd packs together all of SP's hits. They speak of politics, religion and human hypocracy, and all is done in stream of conciosness, you gota love it. IF you are a new fan, you need this cd, absoltely need it.
