Editorial Reviews

2012 two CD collection, the first ever round up of all the singles, A's and B's, that the legend that is Ian Hunter issued for CBS and Chrysalis. Originally known as the voice and face of Mott The Hoople, Hunter split in 1975 and started a solo career that is fast approaching its 40th year. From 1975's 'Once Bitten Twice Shy'(a UK #14 hit) right through until late 83's 'Somethin's Goin' On', this 29 track release has all of Ian's 45's including many versions that were specially edited from LP length. The sadly missed Mick Ronson plays on a good few of the tracks and other contributions come from the likes of Queen, members of Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band including Clarence Clemons, John Cale of Velvet Underground and The Clash's Mick Jones The song 'Ships' later gave (of all people) Barry Manilow a USA Top 10 hit whilst 'Once Bitten Twice Shy' was taken into the American Top 5 by Great White. 7Ts.

...and that one track, "We Gotta Get Out Of Here" was singularly the greatest song - AND greatest TV performance thereof - in/of the year 1980. Musically, the song is a blast, as was most everything IH did until Ronno's untimely demise - but (really, there are just no words) "We Gotta Get Out Of Here" is enhanced exponentially by the presence of Ellen Foley doing, basically, the same thing to IH that she did to Meatloaf a scant three years earlier. "Welcome To The Club" costs a pot, and I know
"Outa Here" is available on other "greatest hits," although you have to look - but, trust me on this one: that one song with Ellen Foley makes every penny you pay for the CD or the MP3 (I still don't know what that means) more than worthwhile.

While this is a welcomed addition to the collection , you will also NEED the album versions. Of course , I have always understood the basic parameters of radio programming ..songs not too long to be played. And although this does have merit in providing exposure to artists , the album versions are usually far superior , as they are the way the artist intended them.
Ian , long a fave , has released QUALITY release after QUALITY release. Each album has significant moments of musical genius and compelling listening.
"Singles Collection" is nice to have sitting next to all the full releases , but I always return to the full release.
5 stars because it is Ian material.

i know the mott stuff but was not familiar with ian's solo material. Real good production. This is classic rock from late 70's early 80's. If you are a mott fan you will be surprised how good this sounds. I would have preferred greatest hits with rarities similiar to the ballad of mott 2 disc set but this is really good. Get it if you are curious.

I absolutely love All of the Good Ones Are Taken, and several of the other songs were not too bad.

This is a silly, redundant collection. The music is good but WHY????? Who needs this?? Once again, they had to try really really hard to screw this up and they did. What is here is great but where is Just Another Night? If you look at the pictures of the singles on the cover they even show Just Another Night but then don't put it on the CD??????? What the heck???? It is only his best song from this period!! SO FRUSTRATING!!!!!!!
