Biography

Kim Wilde. Mention her name and people’s eyes light up. The blonde singer with the siren voice is after all one of pop music's most dazzling stars. For years she has held the record as England’s most successful female pop star ever. The French consider her the “Brigitte Bardot of Rock” and her German fans still venerate her as the sexiest glamour girl to come out of ... Read more in Amazon's Kim Wilde Store

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent 80s music! September 1, 2004
Format:Audio CD
I bought this CD way back in June of 2003 and, like many other CDs I buy, it sat on my shelf for more than a year until I noticed that I had it. I always knew "You Keep Me Hangin On" and "Kids in America," so I figured I would like the other songs, but hardly listened to it once I received it.

It wasn't until today, actually, Sept. 1, 2004, that I began to like the CD. I woke up nearly an hour late for work, and simply grabbed whatever CD I could find in the dark (this was at 5:30 am) to listen to in the car.

I don't know how this works, but I simply suddenly LOVED all the songs! Kim is definitely one of the forgotten relics from the era of big hair and bad synth, and she should've had more success in American by far.

Many say they don't care for "Cambodia," but it's one of my favs. "Rage to Love" and "The Second Time" I like a lot, too. Hearing "You Came" and "Never Trust a Stranger" was like hearing God!

I don't dislike any of the songs on this album. And if you're a fan of 80s music, you won't, either. :)

5.0 out of 5 stars Kim Wilde: HOT HOT HOT!!! March 24, 2005
Format:Audio CD
Britney Spears, eat your heart out! Kim Wilde is the hottest '80s chick period. Her music is awesome, and her image is so sexy. Her songs are wonderful: "Kids in America" is a new wave classic, her remake of "You Keep Me Hangin' On" is still dynamic, and there are several other British hits on here that are all great.

She is my favorite female vocalist, and I would kill to meet her. If you want proof that British girls are sexier than Americans look no further than Miss Wilde.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mainstream pop was once good?! *gasps* March 11, 2006
Format:Audio CD
Yeah, I said it. This is mainstream pop. It is good.

This CD really comes to show how much the music industry has deteriorated in the past two decades. Why are talentless camera-hogs like Britney and Jessica constantly getting airplay in lieu of Kim Wilde, I ask? I could think endlessly, for hours, trying to find an answer to this puzzling question, but still probably couldn't. It's an enigma.

Anyways, I had never actually heard of Wilde until a few years ago - and I discovered her music in two different places. The first was through the video game Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, in which "Kids in America" became a standout favorite of mine, and the second was a cover of "You Keep Me Hangin' On" by the Norwegian band Theatre of Tragedy. I found both songs to be incredibly addictive, so I decided I would try to look for a CD of hers, which brought me here.

The Singles Collection includes 17 excellent pop tracks (or a combination of punk-pop, dancepop and soft ballads) from the 80s and early 90s. Beginning with the faster-paced anthems like "Kids in America" and "Chequered Love", and ending with the calmer, smoother sounds of "In My Life" and the "If I Can't Have You" cover, this compilation offers an excellent insight into the changes of Kim's character and voice over the years. Meanwhile, we have the energetic dancefloor hits "Never Trust a Stranger" and fan favorite "You Came", as well as downtuned ballads like "Child Come Away" and the overlooked "Cambodia" that make you wonder why Kim never completely broke through to the American mainstream.

In conclusion, I think any fan of 80s music should track this down. Although Madonna was the prime diva of the decade, Kim Wilde makes a nice entrance into second place. Classic stuff.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the very best from the New Wave era! January 3, 2004
By LEE
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Back in the early 80's when I was in college , I rented "Kids in America" (yep, there were stores around campus that would rent LPs) and copied it to a cassette tape. It became one of my favorite exercise workout tapes.
Now that I'm in my mid-40's, I'm getting back into the exercise habit to combat weight gain. I began searching for my favorite workout musics from the 80's and I was pleased to find KIM WILDE's "The Singles Collection." Except for "Kids in America" and "Chequered Love," I had forgotten or never heard of the other songs on this CD. I had heard of "You Keep Me Hangin' On," "If I Can't Have You," and a few other songs on this CD, but not sung by KIM WILDE.
I've got to admit that I had forgotten that KIM WILE has a great singing voice. With a voice like that, it's a surprise that she hasn't had more success in her singing career (at least in the USA).
This CD is exactly one-hour in length. When I want to put in a good one-hour cardio workout, this is one of my favorites. It gets my heart rate up to constant 140-155 beats per minute and a smile on my face.

5.0 out of 5 stars No need to buy other Kim Wilde CDs April 25, 2000
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
This CD really is a "Best of" collection spanning about 13 years worth of music. As far as I can tell, the only album that Kim Wilde put out that's not represented is 1984's "Catch as Catch Can," which I think was released only in Europe.
Kim shows surprising range over the course of the CD, starting with the bubble gum hits "Kids in American" and "Chequered Love," to the aggressive "The Second Time," to the wistful "Four Letter Word," to the exhuberant "Love is Holy."
Back in the days of vinyl, I had many of her albums; this CD has pretty much everything that I really liked, and I don't feel as if I'm missing out on the other songs not represented.
Overall, it's a very even collection, with no songs that you really want to skip over.
