Biography

Their debut album, Blue Lines (1991), was co-produced by Jonny Dollar and Cameron McVey, who also became their first manager. Massive Attack went on to critical acclaim for their ever-changing line-up of distinctive, often 'ethereal' or whispery guest vocalists, interspersed with Del Naja and Marshall's (initially Tricky's) own,'and other eclectic references, musical and lyrical.

5.0 out of 5 stars A massive attack on your senses, May 27, 2000
This review is from: Singles Collection 1990-98 (Audio CD)
If you love Massive Attack, you have to buy this. If you love remixes, you have to buy this. The package is really special - the grey-blackish colour will turn into white when you touch it ( leaving fingerprints, etc,... ). There are eleven discs, and each disc has some nice art on it. The remixes are really great. You have some casual house and techno things, like the Perfecto-mixes and an Underworld-mix - they are good, and will get you moving. But the REALLY good ones are the ones done by Ben Young, Alpha, State Of Bengal, U.N.K.L.E, Brian Eno, Blur, Portishead,... and of course there is the magical Mad Professor ( if you like him, check out "No Protection" ). And there are some really nice b-sides, like "Back/shecomes", the superb, almost frightening "Superpredators", "Euro Zero Zero", "Any Love", and the really beautiful "Home Of The Whale". If you like trip hop and special remixes and stuff, buy this one. It's really worth it.

4.0 out of 5 stars A handsome package containing essential mixes!, May 12, 2000
This review is from: Singles Collection 1990-98 (Audio CD)
Browsing through Tower Records the other day, I caught a glimpse of this set. Having not heard anything different from Massive since 1998, I had to buy it. The packaging alone is worth the price. It comes in a "hypercolourish" box that whitens when it comes into contact with heat. So when I took it off the shelf, my handprint immediately made an impression. Interesting...It's the kind of set that belongs in any leather-clad hipster's bachelor pad. Well, the set contains eleven (count 'em!) singles, each individual cover bearing 3-D's Basquiatish art. Sixty-three songs, total. Well worth the price. I haven't listened to all of the mixes yet, but I can say for certain that some are better than others. A few of the mixes will already be famillar for those who have purchased the Mad Professor remix of "Protection." A few are just plain bad like the "Portishead Experience" mix of "Karmacoma." Paul Oakenfold contributes several "Perfecto mixes" ("Unfinished Sympathy," "Safe From Harm," "Be Thankful For What You've Got") which serve to make these tracks easily blendible into any house set.

Overall, some really creative and fun mixes, and let me say again, it's really a great deal. I don't give it five stars because of some of the lame mixes--five stars belong on something truly brilliant--like "Blue Lines" or "Protection," not this hard-to-find singles collection.
