5.0 out of 5 stars Jazzanova Japan Only Release, March 19, 2001

Good stuff as usual fram Claas and Alex and the rest of Jazzanova. I really can't say enough about this guys. They are truly onto something. This is a collection of their originals with a couple of remixes by Japanese artists. I think Jazzanova is among the best in today's music although they have not been recognized by most people. I am sure one day they will be a secret no longer. For those of you that already know this is a goody and the price here at Amazon is just a few dollars more than in Japan so get over it. My life would not be complete without it. I highly recomend everything by Jazzanova, and anything on JCR/Compost records. Enjoy!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Unknown Collection of Jazzanova Singles & EPs, February 6, 2007
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Singles Collection 1997-2000 (Audio CD)
This is a collection of Jazzanova tracks from... 1997-2000, of course! Released in 2001, this came out about a year before their full-length 'official' first album, "In Between", in 2002. So depending on how you look at it, it's THIS one that's the first Jazzanova album. It was released for the Japan market (which explains the rarity & very high-price of it... when you could find it).

It's not bad. Clearly the earlier days of Jazzanova - and i love the experimentation. Most of these cuts (I think all but maybe 1 or 2) were NOT on their "In Between" album. The album starts out with the cool "le Jardin Street", nice keys, a little bossa beat that you came to expect from loads of Compost stars from the time and just a bit of cuica in there too. Following up is the remix to IMO their most popular track from 2000-2002 (before the album) "Fedime's Flight". This one was done up by Japan's own Kyoto Jazz Massive. So you know to expect their trademark airy beats that sort of guide the song along. The track was done I think on the eve of KJM joining Compost Records too. KJM weren't the only one's from Japan to throw in a remix - check out Yukihiro Fukutomi's version of "Coffee Talk". It's got a sort of broken bossa in it :)! But I think one of my favorite tracks from this was "Introspection". It's sort of a symbol to me of how diverse Jazzanova's sound can be. Even though there's obviously some melodic similarities with the sample used here (and Coffee Talk), but it's a track that goes into loads of different musical styles.

I can't believe I never reviewed this one... it was before Jazzanova went to Sonar Kollectiv, and before there were seemingly quarterly releases by Jazzanova in some form or another (remixes, remix albums, compilations, etc.). That's right - Jazzanova are with Sonar Kollectiv - been there for a few years now, no longer JCR... the re-release of their 1997-2000 remix album was courtesy of Sonar Kollectiv. I'd recommend this particular album only to the hard-core, Jazzanova fans though; it'll be pretty tough to find and it will probably come at a higher than usual price for even Japanese imports (and that's saying something). Also, be sure not to mix this one up with their remix album from the same time period - one difference is that this one came in a hard-case whereas the others were in a paper/digipack.

5.0 out of 5 stars Talk about my future, June 27, 2005
By
D.H. (Seattle, WA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Singles Collection 1997-2000 (Audio CD)
In my opinion, this is the best album by Jazzanova. It contains their singles from 1997-2000 and is deceptively similar in packaging to their remix album. In addition to the singles, the album contains remixes of three of them. The singles, are a pleasant mix of jazz and downbeat electronica, utlizing samples in certain places as well. Each piece explores a different avenue using different elements to create a musical landscape that is very satisfying with each listen. Certain of the tracks have a jazz vocal element, others are instrumentals. Whatever elements have been combined, each single seems to pull the combination together exceptionally well. Perhaps this is why they need six band members. The remixes are a real treat, taking three of the singles, and upping the dance tempo and accentuating and certain of the jazz elements. All together making this one of the best CD's in my collection.
