4.0 out of 5 stars The Singles Collection, is this necessary?
I was waiting for this to finally be available in the States, and when it was I got a fantastic price ($36.95) right here at AmazonMarketplace. The price was right, and the packaging itself is very attractive. The royal purple cover with 45 sleeves from around the world was appealing, but when you lift off the top, and you have mini-LP style sleeves housing each...

3.0 out of 5 stars Missing singles shortchange the US
This is supposed to be the Singles Collection for the albums Queen through Jazz, but it's missing 3 singles, not to mention 2 additional single variations. Now I can live without the US single variants for Tie Your Mother Down and Don't Stop Me Now (since they don't contain any non-album B-sides), but I can't be satisfied with the additional exclusion of the US Liar,...

I was waiting for this to finally be available in the States, and when it was I got a fantastic price ($36.95) right here at AmazonMarketplace. The price was right, and the packaging itself is very attractive. The royal purple cover with 45 sleeves from around the world was appealing, but when you lift off the top, and you have mini-LP style sleeves housing each CD-single - it surely is a must for Queen fans.

The music itself sounds better than ever. The songs sound brighter, purer and feels like these 30 year old songs were just recorded yesterday.

I was a bit disappointed with the a couple of these versions here, especially the songs included that were originally part of a musical pastiche or medley on the albums. Songs like 'Lily of the Valley' and 'Tenement Funster' are instead taken from the album version and either faded in or out where the segue would begin. On the other hand 'Flick of the Wrist' is another one of these songs, and they actually did a proper job with this track.

Japan had released a mini-CD version of something like this in 1994, except instead of finishing up in 1979 it extended all the way through to 1986. The Japanese box set had a lot more substance to it, with extra tracks and superior versions of some rare songs. On the other hand, this new UK version looks better, and the normal-sized CDs are more pleasing to the eye as well. If you were to try and obtain the Japanese singles set these days you'd have to shell out around $300, and when you compare it with the $36 I spent for this new EMI version, there's no contest. The UK version sounds much better anyway than the Japan box set.

I could easily recommend this box set, especially when the price is right.

This is supposed to be the Singles Collection for the albums Queen through Jazz, but it's missing 3 singles, not to mention 2 additional single variations. Now I can live without the US single variants for Tie Your Mother Down and Don't Stop Me Now (since they don't contain any non-album B-sides), but I can't be satisfied with the additional exclusion of the US Liar, It's Late, and Jealousy singles. Again these particular singles don't have any non-album tracks but they should be here for the sake of completeness. Otherwise, this set should be called the UK Singles Collection. In my opinion, if you're going to charge such a high price for this, then it should be complete. Otherwise, what's the point?

this is a nice box set ( volume one of two) for queen diehard collectorors, this set basically replicated the original 45 sleeves and b sides and comes with a nice booklet and box, good for collectors as i said.

1.0 out of 5 stars 90 bucks for some colorful sleeves? what a scam!, December 22, 2008
This review is from: The Singles Collection (Audio CD)
This is outrageous! There is nothing in this collection that haven't ever been previously released. Just some useless cardboard sleeves. It doesn't even include a booklet!!!

You can buy the FULL collection of Queen's 70s albums for the same amount (and if you buy the Hollywood CDs, you'll get the pics of the singles in each booklet).

In the end, you'll be spending ninety bucks for some eye candy. Avoid this at all costs!

1.0 out of 5 stars Buy the Platinum Collection Instead, December 21, 2008
This review is from: The Singles Collection (Audio CD)
At a cost of over 3 dollars per song, this box set is a rip off. For one fifth of the price, one would be much better off getting The Platinum Collection, which contains the vast majority of Queen's hit singles rather than just a snapshot of a portion of their 70's work.

Sure it looks nice, but it is all environmentally unfriendly packaging with little substance. It has only 28 songs on 13 CD's. It seems pointless to put in a CD that only has 5 minutes of playing time.

This is supposed to come out today, but since it is an import, will it be available to purchase in any stores in the U.S., specifically Best Buy or Borders? Thanks

Update: Checked Best Buy, shows that it is not available for pickup from the store. Placed my order thru Amazon.com today, should get it after Christmas but before New Years.
