5.0 out of 5 stars Hard-To-Find stuff!
If you are a fan of the 60's British Invasion, you need this cd. There are other, cheaper compilations of The Fortunes' music out there. The problem is, all those are inferior re-recordings. It took me a helluva long time to find the original hit version of HERE IT COMES AGAIN, but by gosh, it's here, along with all the other ORIGINAL HIT RECORDINGS of The Fortunes, like...

5.0 out of 5 stars Definitive collection of brilliant harmony group, October 4, 2004
This review is from: Singles (Audio CD)
The Fortunes emerged in mid-sixties Britain with their debut single, Caroline, which failed to chart but was adopted as the theme song of the famous pirate radio station, Radio Caroline. This gave them plenty of publicity and they went on to have five UK chart hits, four of which made the top ten. Of these, the one they are best remembered for is You've got your troubles, their biggest hit. It peaked at number two in Britain and made the top ten in America. The follow-up, Here it comes again, made the top five in Britain and the top thirty in America. Following these two, their next single, This golden ring, was a comparative disappointment, failing to reach the UK top ten and being only a minor American hit. Worse was to follow, as they were unable to chart again for a few years.

Changes of label eventually yielded more hits, these being That same old feeling (a minor USA hit, in direct competition with the original by Pickettywitch), Here comes that rainy day feeling again (USA top twenty), Freedom come freedom go (UK top ten, a minor USA hit) and Storm in a teacup (UK top ten hit). So ended the chart career of the Fortunes.

This compilation contains all these hits together with all the intermediate failed singles. Moreover, these are all the original recordings - something not always true of re-issues of Fortunes music.

If you enjoy the music of the Hollies and the Tremeloes, you might give the Fortunes a listen.

4.0 out of 5 stars 24 Original Hits & Hard To Find Singles, May 6, 2007

This is the most complete CD to contain The Fortunes ORIGINAL RECORDINGS of their '60's and early '70's hits [ and misses too that didn't chart, but are top-notch quality ]. What also makes this the definitive Fortunes CD is that it includes the original versions from the different labels they recorded for : Decca , Press, United Artists, World Pacific & Capitol. So, it's great to have them all on one disc.

Also has some great little heard songs that were hits overseas, but not in the US. For instance , their version of " Seasons In The Sun " was released in 1969 & a big hit in Holland . Some great songs here of great UK pop with vocal harmonies. Nice booklet contains the history of the group, picture sleeves and photos. This CD is THE one to get for fans of this great pop group.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Fortune of British Invasion Music, October 30, 2007
This review is from: Singles (Audio CD)
I was just 15 years old in 1965 when "You've Got Your Troubles" hit the American charts and peaked at Number 7, their only Top Ten Hit in the USA.

This song brings back so many memories and was just one of the British Invasion hits that inspired me as a freshman in High School to learn guitar and compose and perform rock music.

This collection offers some 24 Fortune tunes, many of which never made it to the US airways after the boycott many American Record companys and radio stations foisted upon us to beef up the sagging rock scene here in the states in the later 60's.

"Here Comes That Rainy Day Feeling Again" finally broke through the charts and rose to Billboard's Top 15 song in 1971; another great hit by the Fortunes. For some reason this compilation, "The Hits" rating chart by song doesn't show this for that song [?]

This is an excellent import CD from BF Holland, and kudos to Amazon for offering this product and providing so many wonderful memories. It was worth every penny, and is the best compilation of this group I have ever seen. [p.s. It was the Fortunes who sang the original and famous "It's the Real Thing" Coca Cola jingle that sold a lot of coke.]

You've Got Your Troubles, Here It Comes Again and 5&1/2 years later, Here Comes That Rainy Day Feeling Again. All here and all the originals. I can't add much to the other reviewers except to say that this is a nice CD.
Just about every song is listenable and that says something as sometimes you get the hits but you also get the misses; not here. Good CD even if it costs a little more. No matter what age we live in you still get what you pay for.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Fortunes Singles, April 16, 2009

This is a wonderful compilation of the greatest hits from a group that receives far too little airplay. Their body of work is impressive ranging from pop British Invasion hits to catchy commercial jingles. This is a great recording to add to your library.

Excellent CD. These are all orginal remastered songs. If you like the Fortunes, you will like this CD. I only like a few of their songs. Couldn't find individual songs at that time.

5.0 out of 5 stars many beautiful gems - quiet brilliance, October 9, 2011
This review is from: Singles (Audio CD)
Contains 24 of The Fortunes original A sides from the period 1964 to 1973 - including their 5 UK chart entries in 'You've Got Your Troubles', 'Here It Comes Again', 'This Golden Ring', 'Freedom Come Freedom Go', and 'Storm In A Teacup' (65wks in total - a chart life hardly comparable to their durability). There was much more as witnessed by the rest of the tracks 'Caroline', 'You Gave Me Somebody To Love', 'Silent Street', 'Is It Really Worth Your While', 'Our Love Has Gone', 'The Idol', 'Loving Cup', 'Seasons In The Sun', 'The Celebration Of The Year', 'The Ballad Of The Alamo', 'Books And Films', 'That Same Old Feeling', 'Here Comes That Rainy Day Feeling Again', 'People I've Gotta Dream', 'Baby By The Way', 'Everything Is Out Of Season', 'Wait Until September', 'Secret Love' and 'Whenever It's A Sunday' featuring an array of symphonic ballads, happy fun sounds, magnificent harmonies, and Rod Allen - one of that rare breed of being both a great bass player & vocalist! The most famous version of the group was probably Rod Allen, Barry Pritchard, Glen Dale, David Carr, and Andy Brown - in fact they only existed together during a very short period from Sept '64 to June '66 (less than two years - part of the Decca years) before Glen Dale left. Shel MacRae came in from 'Is It Really Worth Your While' on. Dave Carr left after 'Seasons In The Sun' and George McAllister replaced him a year later! Even with 24 A sides there are still some missing (from the period) including 'Summertime Summertime', 'Come On Girl', 'Look Homeward Angel', 'Just Another Dream', 'Fire Brigade' and the brilliant 'Power & The Glory'. Highlights here are 'Storm In A Teacup' the beautiful 'Loving Cup' and the progressive 'The Idol'. A great compilation complete with a fine picture disc and a 12 page booklet & probably their best CD release to date! Well produced performed positive happy solid vocal 60s pop sounds, with many beautiful gems. Quiet brilliance.
