Tom Jones - Praise & Blame

Biography

Tom Jones: Praise and Blame

“We wanted to go back to basics, go back to the source, it was just me singing live with a rhythm section - no overdubbing, no gimmicks, no complicated horn and string arrangements, just get the song down in an entire take, capture the meaning of the song, its spirituality, its life, and capture that moment, right there. And I think that’s what we’ve done,” says Tom… Read more in Amazon's Tom Jones Store

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

One is tempted to note that they don't make 'em like Tom Jones anymore, but, in fact, they do. The hunky Welshman couldn't swivel a hit these days without knocking over a pop performer indebt to his baldly over-the-top delivery and love-man persona. No, they make a lot of 'em like Tom Jones--they just don't make 'em quite so... hearty. Nearly as identifiable with swinging England as the Beatles, Jones penetrated the charts in the late '60s and early '70s with a series of singles marked by surging pop arrangements and the singer's honed-on-R&B vocals. Celebrated for his skill at reducing female fans to quaking jelly, Jones clearly had an ear for songs that played to his strength as a sex symbol. Those time-pegged smashes--"Help Yourself," "Without Love," "She's a Lady," and, of course, the mind-boggling "What's New Pussycat?"--are represented on this 50-song, two-disc career overview. In fact, only one of Jones's 21 charting tracks--1987's U.K. charter "A Boy from Nowhere"--is excluded. That said, with the notable exception of his renowned 1988 Art of Noise collaboration on Prince's "Kiss," Jones's more recent work is ignored. Hey, a little something from the underappreciated '94 comeback The Lead and How to Swing It would've rounded things off nicely. Still, The Singles+ keeps up with Jones quite nicely through his prime years. --Steven Stolder

5.0 out of 5 stars If you're Jones-in' for some Tom..., March 16, 2003

Finally a Best Of package worthy of the man! I would have ordered this sooner, but I read some one of the reviews from another customer that said the sound quality was lousy. Nothing could be further from the truth! These are indeed the original masters and they sound great. Sure a few show the limitations of the time they were recorded, but what cd of 60's and 70's music doesn't?! This 2 cd set features EVERY hit single that you can recall and several b-sides that have been extremely hard to find. The Man Who Knows Too Much is really the reason why I finally just broke down and bought this...it alone is worth the price of the cd. Don't waste your time on other compilations - this is the definative Best Of Tom Jones out there.

4.0 out of 5 stars Tom Jones - Remastered Originals, July 17, 2002

You may ask why only 4 stars?? Out of the 50 tracks on this great 2 CD set, I would have chosen other tracks than some that are on this set. However, I am highly pleased with the quantity of tracks, many of the originals I love. The price was great for this number of song selections, and included a great package insert as an added bonus. And the remastering, in my opinion, was so good in some of the tracks, I heard sounds on some familiar tunes I had never heard before. "Remastering" the Master, Tom Jones, is hard to do. Bar none, he is the master of his craft. Highly recommended !!

5.0 out of 5 stars Definitive sixties and seventies hits, September 11, 2004
This review is from: The Singles+ (Audio CD)
Tom Jones is a legend in his own lifetime and there is a bewildering array of compilations available of varying quality. Choosing one is complicated by his career renaissance following his hugely successful Reload album in the nineties. Personally, I prefer to keep that aspect of his career separate from his earlier music. This compilation, focusing mainly on the sixties and seventies, is the best compilation of Tom's earlier music.

Among the classic songs from his peak years (1965 to 1972) that you will find here are It's not unusual, What's new pussycat, Green green grass of home, Detroit city, Funny familiar forgotten feelings, I'll never fall in love again, I'm coming home, Delilah, Help yourself, A minute of your time, Love me tonight, Without love, Daughter of darkness, I who have nothing, She's a lady, Till and The young new Mexican puppeteer. All his other hits from this period are also here.

Following that classic period, Tom's hits became fewer and charter lower but Letter to Lucille (1973), Something 'bout you baby I like (1974), Say you'll stay until tomorrow (1977 - this reached number one on the USA country chart) and Kiss (a UK top five hit with the Art of Noise from 1988) are all here.

Following his unexpected success on the country chart, Tom recorded other material in similar vein in the late seventies and early eighties and had further country hits without matching the success of Say you'll stay until tomorrow. None of these recordings are included here. Tom reverted to pop music and had a UK number two hit in 1987 with A boy from nowhere. This is also excluded, as is the follow-up, I was born to be me. Next came Kiss, which is included, but that is as far as this compilation goes.

With a selection of failed singles and B-sides also included, this is a brilliant compilation of Tom's music from 1965 to 1977, plus one track from 1988. Other aspects of his career including his nineties comeback are covered by other compilations, but if you want the music that made him famous, this double CD should suit you.
