5.0 out of 5 stars If you're Jones-in' for some Tom...
Finally a Best Of package worthy of the man! I would have ordered this sooner, but I read some one of the reviews from another customer that said the sound quality was lousy. Nothing could be further from the truth! These are indeed the original masters and they sound great. Sure a few show the limitations of the time they were recorded, but what cd of 60's and 70's...

2.0 out of 5 stars Re-Mastered? from poor quality recordings?
I am very disappointed in the quality of these 2 CDs (set), the sound is poor like an old 45rpm record. Had to turn volume up full blast to even get a facsimile of the Tom I remember. If you're looking for a trip down memory lane, don't buy this albumn as you'll be disappointed. It does a dis-service to this fine singer's depth and range. The shipping/handling fee...

Finally a Best Of package worthy of the man! I would have ordered this sooner, but I read some one of the reviews from another customer that said the sound quality was lousy. Nothing could be further from the truth! These are indeed the original masters and they sound great. Sure a few show the limitations of the time they were recorded, but what cd of 60's and 70's music doesn't?! This 2 cd set features EVERY hit single that you can recall and several b-sides that have been extremely hard to find. The Man Who Knows Too Much is really the reason why I finally just broke down and bought this...it alone is worth the price of the cd. Don't waste your time on other compilations - this is the definative Best Of Tom Jones out there.

4.0 out of 5 stars Tom Jones - Remastered Originals, July 17, 2002

You may ask why only 4 stars?? Out of the 50 tracks on this great 2 CD set, I would have chosen other tracks than some that are on this set. However, I am highly pleased with the quantity of tracks, many of the originals I love. The price was great for this number of song selections, and included a great package insert as an added bonus. And the remastering, in my opinion, was so good in some of the tracks, I heard sounds on some familiar tunes I had never heard before. "Remastering" the Master, Tom Jones, is hard to do. Bar none, he is the master of his craft. Highly recommended !!

5.0 out of 5 stars Definitive sixties and seventies hits, September 11, 2004
This review is from: The Singles+ (Audio CD)
Tom Jones is a legend in his own lifetime and there is a bewildering array of compilations available of varying quality. Choosing one is complicated by his career renaissance following his hugely successful Reload album in the nineties. Personally, I prefer to keep that aspect of his career separate from his earlier music. This compilation, focusing mainly on the sixties and seventies, is the best compilation of Tom's earlier music.

Among the classic songs from his peak years (1965 to 1972) that you will find here are It's not unusual, What's new pussycat, Green green grass of home, Detroit city, Funny familiar forgotten feelings, I'll never fall in love again, I'm coming home, Delilah, Help yourself, A minute of your time, Love me tonight, Without love, Daughter of darkness, I who have nothing, She's a lady, Till and The young new Mexican puppeteer. All his other hits from this period are also here.

Following that classic period, Tom's hits became fewer and charter lower but Letter to Lucille (1973), Something 'bout you baby I like (1974), Say you'll stay until tomorrow (1977 - this reached number one on the USA country chart) and Kiss (a UK top five hit with the Art of Noise from 1988) are all here.

Following his unexpected success on the country chart, Tom recorded other material in similar vein in the late seventies and early eighties and had further country hits without matching the success of Say you'll stay until tomorrow. None of these recordings are included here. Tom reverted to pop music and had a UK number two hit in 1987 with A boy from nowhere. This is also excluded, as is the follow-up, I was born to be me. Next came Kiss, which is included, but that is as far as this compilation goes.

With a selection of failed singles and B-sides also included, this is a brilliant compilation of Tom's music from 1965 to 1977, plus one track from 1988. Other aspects of his career including his nineties comeback are covered by other compilations, but if you want the music that made him famous, this double CD should suit you.

This album is a must have for the true fan. It has every one of his popular singles. This includes The Man Who Knows Too Much, which I could never find. It also had several that I had never heard. I just love it though because it is the definitive collection.
