Chrissie Hynde is riveting in this collection of videos from 1979 through 1986; with the exception of "Stop Your Sobbing" and "I go to Sleep", which were written by her then love interest Ray Davies, Hynde wrote or co-wrote all the songs. Petite and with ultra trend-setting casual chic, Hynde is fabulous to listen to, and fun to watch. Half of the songs are performed with the original band members, before the group was torn apart by substance abuse and heart failure due to an alcohol-drug mix. The group Hynde formed in the late '70s consisted of James Honeyman-Scott (1956-1982), Pete Farndon (1952-1983), and Martin Chambers, drums. Others that played in the band after '82, include Robbie McIntosh, guitar, and Malcolm Foster, bass. Thankfully the videos were directed with a little simplicity, relying heavily on concert footage, without a lot of "clever camerawork" to distract from the music. Favorite cuts for me are "Brass in Pocket", "I go to Sleep", "Back in the Chain Gang", and the one where Hynde is brilliant, "Middle of the Road". Total running time is 56 minutes. Song list, with U.K. release dates: "Stop Your Sobbing" 1979 "Kid" 1979 "Brass in Pocket" 1979 "Talk of the Town" 1980 "I go to Sleep" 1981 "Day After Day" 1981 "Message of Love" 1981 "Back on the Chain Gang" 1982 "Middle of the Road" 1984 "2000 Miles" 1983 "Show Me" 1984 "Thin Line Between Love and Hate" 1984 "Don't Get Me Wrong" 1986 "Hymn to Her" 1986 "My Baby" 1987

Excellent!, November 20, 1999
This review is from: Singles [VHS] (VHS Tape)
From start to finish, this compilation of the Pretenders music is awesome. Spanning more than 10 years (and numerous band member changes) Chrissie Hynde has managed to keep the original sound of the music constant. This is a must have for any Pretenders fan. I only wish Warner Bros. would re-release an updated version of this video to include the videos post 1986, which would include the mega hit "I'll Stand By You". Maybe someday they will. This video is a great tribute to a great rock and roll band that's still going strong!

The Greatest Female Singer/Songwriter? Greatest Band?, October 4, 2000
This review is from: Singles [VHS] (VHS Tape)
As a great fan of talented musicians of both sexes, I'm afraid I may sound more than a little chauvinistic in stating that the list of truly great female singer/songwriters is a short one. Here's mine: Joni Mitchell, Sinead O'Connor, Liz Phair and - the all-time greatest - Chrissie Hynde, lead singer of the Pretenders. If you are not a fan of the Pretenders, it is almost certainly because either you don't know them, never gave them a chance or don't like great music. This is a great way to get to know them.
