5.0 out of 5 stars Non-members won't enjoy???

3.0 out of 5 stars Comedy that runs out of gags midway through
Overall, this film isn't a bad starting film for Halestorm Entertainment. To ensure that this film was successful in the newly formed LDS film industry, there were plenty of hilarious cameos by LDS Celebrities like Steve Young (who is just awesome in his comedic cameo), Julie Stoffer of "MTV's The Real World New Orleans" infamy (her cameo was in a brilliant and cleverly...

I'm not a Mormon, and never have been, but I found this movie hilarious. For the non-Mormon, there is more than one level of humor: (1) the quality of writing & production is somewhat comical in itself, (2) this movie pokes fun at some elements of Utah Mormon culture, and (3) the non-Mormon viewer finds humor in ALL elements of Utah Mormon culture, even the ones this movie takes seriously. So whether you're a Mormon or not, if you think Mormons are funny, you will find this movie funny.

"The R.M." is even funnier, in some respects.

I do not recommend this movie to just any non-Mormon viewer, though. Without some knowledge of Mormon beliefs & culture (and the more the better), a lot of the humor will be lost on you, and you will probably just find the movie boring.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great LDS Entertainment, August 3, 2004
This review is from: The Singles Ward DVD (DVD)
I didn't think I would laugh as much as I did when I picked up Singles Ward... but I found myself laughing throughout most of this movie. It really does pick on the the funny quirks of the LDS religion, but doesn't enter the realm of being sacriligious or completely rude to the LDS faith.

The stereotypical characters are a real hoot!!! You find nearly every type of Mormon and even non-Mormons living in Provo.

There were a coupe of scenes that were a little bit unrealistic. Like when the police want to see the main character's ID when he is hiding from the Bishop with his laundry. Or the fact that a group of people can drive from the hills of Provo, somehow drive through American Fork (jumping the railroad tracks), and make it to Salt Lake International in just 20 minutes. But other than annoying things like this, it was a lot of fun.

If you aren't LDS, I don't think you'll get a lot of the humor. If you are, then the humor is fantastic. It is nice to sit back and laugh at ourselves now and then.

The soundtrack to this movie is AMAZING. I have got to buy it!! Sure, the tempo of church favorites has been increased (with added percussion), but it is still wonderful to listen to.

The only other thing that didn't sit right with me about this movie with the main character's conversion at the end. I just didn't buy it. Though, I've got to hand it to the director... it is not an easy thing to pull off.

Fun, fun, fun... most definately a 5 star movie. I would recommend watching this with a bunch of people as I'm sure there will be a lot of finger pointing: "Hey!!! That's you!!"

5.0 out of 5 stars We are a peculiar people, June 26, 2002
By
Lu C. (Brigham City, Ut.) - See all my reviews
As a raised in the Church "Mormon" I don't know how many of the jokes people not familiar with the Church will get, but believe me this is a very funny movie.
It makes fun of the Church (or the members) without making light of the temple, the prophet, the doctrines or anything else most "Mormon" find sacred. Watching this movie will make all those "Mormons" who grew up saying, "What so peculiar about us,?" laugh at how peculiar we can be. Because you can't really see members of any other faith doing anything equivalent to some of things that the characters in the movie do, but we all know (or are) members who act and feel that way.
As one who has had several music callings, I loved the music in this movie. Classic hymns and children's songs in fun new arrangements. Picture a lounge singing performing "Teach me to Walk in the Light" or a pop version of "Popcorn Popping" and you get an idea of some of the music in this movie.
Not the most spiritual movie ,but I loved it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Who needs to be mormon to like this?, November 4, 2002
By A Customer
All right I admit that there might be a mormon language just like there is a catholic language or buddist but I still got the picture. This movie was wildly hilarious for an independent style film. When each spotlight character was pointed out from other movies it gave me a great desire to see those also.
After reading other reviews that were negative, worrying about how a non mormon would see this movie I can say they are wrong. I found it highly entertaining and even now have purchased it on DVD and shared it with other friends which are not mormon.
This is a great movie cross-cultural for these characters are not just in the mormon church but they are in the clubs and elsewhere in the single life. If you have been single and gone into the world you will see many of these same characters repeated.
For all those uptight mormons that won't share, 'Non mormons' like a good clean laugh as much as the next guy -So get over yourselves. (Don't believe those 'mormon' friends that say you won't understand it). In conclusion whether your mormon or not this is a funny film good for a great laugh.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Mormon Movie So Far, November 27, 2005
By

I am a Mormon and I grew up in the church.Even if we don't have any Singles Ward in this country,we can still relate about the agony when it comes to finding an eternal companion. And what's great about this movie is that it pokes fun at our frustrations, without being preachy. There are lots of genuinely funny moments in this movie, including the ones when Jonathan is doing "stand up comedy" (Seven Brides and One Brother!) and when he was caught by his friends talking alone, etc.
I dont think we should treat this movie too seriously.Though this movie will inspire us and will remind us about how "cool" it is to be a Mormon, this is mainly a romantic comedy, its not necessary (at least in this movie) to include all the teachings of our church.
I think this is the best Mormon Movie so far (haven't seen "The Best Two Years" and "Home Teachers" though)."The RM" is really great too I highly recommend it.I didnt like "Charly" and "The Other Side of Heaven" that much.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hilarious Latter-day Saint comedy, October 7, 2003
By
This review is from: The Singles Ward DVD (DVD)
This movie is absolutely hilarious for Latter-day Saints who have been in a singles ward. It is made by Latter-day Saints for Latter-day Saints. It is a parody of the Latter-day Saint culture. It has jokes about everything from jello with carrots to mormon standard time.

4.0 out of 5 stars Life is tough, and then you have to go a courtin', July 25, 2005
This review is from: The Singles Ward VHS (VHS Tape)
There are several ways to approach this film.1st,as an academic analysis-You can rip it to shreds. Why bother. This isn't an attempt to impress the hoity-toity,brie and wine crowd.2nd-a great glimpse into to the utter hilarity of being a member of the church in question, the secret handshake words and phrases, the odd social mores,it's all to die for. No,I watch for insights into the horror of finding a mate of a certain type if you missed the window of opportunity that is most appropriate for young Mormons, you know, that 1st 6 months after your mission and for females anytime BEFORE your bishop starts eying you for a mission. The pathetic nature of the desperation ,resignation or withdrawl you see in a typical singles ward can be entertaining and heartbreaking at the same time. The mating rituals of the over the hill "good"girls and boys does invite more study. In order not to do crazy things,I guess it is good to approach this subject with humor. There is a lot more material to be mined here. This effort, based on the constraints of ,mainly, money is quite good,I would give it two thumbs up.

4.0 out of 5 stars mormon singles culture at it's finest, March 20, 2002

this film brings the mormon singles culture to the big screen. What fuels inside jokes in the mormon lifestyle now is brought to life by a wonderfully acted, light hearted cast. I think that everyone can relate to this film wether or not a mormon.loads of fun. Great to take friends to. I feel it safe enough to bring my mom along. Awesome sound track to boot. I give 4 caffine free diet cokes!

4.0 out of 5 stars Hackneyed Humor, but Entertaining Nonetheless, January 22, 2004
By
Kevin Kartchner (Albuquerque, NM United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Singles Ward DVD (DVD)
I tried hard not to like this film, believing that my sense of humor was too refined to find anything funny in a comedy made specifically for Mormons about the plight of single church members who are trying to find eternal mates. However, despite the stereotypes, some of the older-than-the-hills humor, and the contrived cameo appearances by numerous LDS celebrities (Brother "Niner"? Brother "Angel"?), I couldn't help laughing at many of the farcical situations and characters that the film portrays, in which any long-term LDS church member can find a kernel of truth. Taken as satire, this film succeeds on various levels.

Some of the funniest material is in the outtakes, particularly (a) when Will Swenson pulls out a bottle of "beer" and tells Connie Young, "Brigham, Schmigham! Want to make out?" and (b) when one of the hapless cops (played by Salt Lake City radio personality Jimmy Chunga) tells Connie Young (who is on the wall above him), "Ma'am, move away from the building...do you work out?" The cast obviously had a fun time making the movie, which is reflected in its lighthearted feel.

5.0 out of 5 stars A FUNNY ROMANTIC COMIDY FOR MORMONS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!, July 25, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: The Singles Ward DVD (DVD)
If you are LDS you will love this movie. It is such a funny movie. And you will find yourself laughing out loud at most of the movie. Its about a devorcy who findes himself hateing his church and becoming an inactive member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Later Day Saints. After he goes to his wards singles dance (which he finds lame and usless) he meats an beautiful outgoing girl who happens to be the woman he told off on the phone (so she obviously does not like him *at first*). He findes himself falling in love with her, and as he tries to win her heart while staying "cool and prideful" all of there worlds are turned up side down in the most hallarious way. This movie is romantic, absolutly funny, and as relistic as any movie you will find out there, see this movie.... it is worth your time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
