5.0 out of 5 stars Highly entertaining!
This book was really funny and entertaining. There were a bunch of times where Victoria ends up in quite humorous predicaments and they had me laughing out loud (especially crashing into the glass table at Barneys). Overall I really loved Victoria's character and felt she was a lot like most ordinary girls in their 20s. At first I couldn't quite grasp the idea of the...

When I picked out this book I thought to myself I just want a light chick flicky fluffy read. Thats pretty much what I got. I wasn't crazy about the book, but it kept my attention. I have to admit I was not very fond of the main character Vic. She seemed kinda selfish to me. For instance one of her biggest complaints is about her friend Gwynn not being the girl she knew so well in college that would take her friends to an expensive spa on a whim and pay for the full trip. It seemed like Vic was only happy with Gwynn when she would drop everything she was doing for Vic's needs. I also want to know if this author is still in high school. Its laughable how the main character is dreading the ripe old age of 25. I'm a 24 year old myself, and I just found her whining about growing old to be annoying and unecessary. The writing also seemed lazy. It bothered me that instead of offering a description of a character's physical appearance, she would just name a celebrity that the person looks like and be done with it. Be ready for cliche's left and right. This is basically a fluffy read that you will predict the hell out of. Even with all the flaws, I thought the book was okay. You definitly get a sense that this is the author's first attempt at a novel.

Overall I really loved Victoria's character and felt she was a lot like most ordinary girls in their 20s. At first I couldn't quite grasp the idea of the "wingwoman" and wondered how this concept would work and be interesting but the author does it great. Congrats on a great debut!

4.0 out of 5 stars Perfect book if you are or ever WERE a singletini..., September 22, 2006
This review is from: Singletini: A Novel (Paperback)
Such an easy read and very "relatable" (I know it's not a word, but the best I could come up with). If you live in or just love Chicago, then this is definitely a great read. A great book finally staged in a great city!! Victoria Hart is the US (midwestern) Bridget Jones, with a sense of style.

1.0 out of 5 stars I just lost 50 IQ points..., July 23, 2008
This review is from: Singletini: A Novel (Paperback)
This has got to be the stupidest book I have ever read. I actually threw it in disgust on my bedroom floor three times!

I have read many other chick lit books this summer as a break from classes and many were cute, made me laugh, made me cry and really entertained me. Some of the writers were witty beyond comprehension, until I got to this Singletini book..

I mean, really! How could a the female main character who is pulling down $30K a year afford to live by herself in the downtown Chicago area, drive a silver VW bug, have a $20K credit limit on her credit card and own designer clothes and be drinking $10 to $15 martinis like it's tap water? Really?

And could we just get over the author's disgusting attitude regarding women who are not size 0, 2 or anorexics. Sorry girl, but the average American female is 5'4" and 160 lbs. In this book, the one girl who is over 150 lbs is consistently called a cow.

And can we just not help but barf over the stupid main character. MUST DRINK SLOWLY. She's an alcoholic and spend thrift. Great female. Makes me want to hang out with her. The fact that her and her three friends are barely turning 25, are all either married, engaged or enciente is also a bit wierd for city-dwelling gals. No one in this book is interested in an education or a career beyond the law school student. All the other girls are about shopping, hooking up, shopping and drinking themselves under the table.

ACK! Like my title says, save your 50 IQ points and grab another book off the book store or library shelf. Even reading the news that is at the bottom of your pet bird's cage with crap all over it is better than this folderol.

1.0 out of 5 stars Way too immature, July 14, 2010

This review is from: Singletini: A Novel (Paperback)
I do enjoy the Chick-Lit genre from time to time, especially in the summer when it's so hot that I feel like my eyes are evaporating. But this one was not a good choice.

The protagonist, Victoria Hart (who's also the narrator) is a 20-something woman living in the city, scared of growing up and getting married while her friends seem to do just that. I must admit that the whole wing woman thing was promising, but it didn't live up to its potential. Victoria sounds and acts way too immature, and reading the story from her mouth feels like the little sister chattering over your shoulder while you're on the phone-- too many eeks and acks, and way too much baby talk for my taste. If you're in your 20s and you're gonna curse, curse like sailor, woman!

All in all, I did not enjoy this at all, but a lot of people seem to have given it 5 stars, so maybe I'm missing something.

2.0 out of 5 stars are you reading the same book i am?, July 17, 2007

first of all, it's poorly written. it's filled with cliches, predictable characters, way too much repetition, and a very flimsy storyline. wasn't anyone else bothered by the fact that the heroine is constantly harried? she doesn't just run into one awkward situation, she has them every other chapter!

in fact, the author says she hadn't even thought of the main story line until her publisher suggested it, and then, she re-wrote it. bad idea. a business built on wingwomen?

this book shows me that just about any one can get published if they try chick lit, which i normally like if it's inventive and well written. read "bitter is the new black" instead. it was everything this book was not - well written, genuinely funny and compelling.

i'm sure the author of "singletini" is a great copywriter, but she needs a bit more guidance and editing if she wants to attempt a novel again.

can't put "singletini" down? i can barely pick it back up!

3.0 out of 5 stars A great read, September 7, 2006
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Singletini: A Novel (Paperback)
Singletini, at a glance, seems like typical chick-lit. And for the most part it is. But what seperates the good from the bad is an interesting writing style. Amanda Trimble most definately has an interesting and engrossing writing style. Her wit and humor and ability to set a scene make Singletini an excellent read.

There are certainly some things to be critical about here. Like a lot of chick-lit lately, there seems to be a few too many interchangeable supporting characters who are given nothing to do. A few of the situations are a little too comical and cliched. And the ending seems a little familiar (somebody must have watched "My Best Friends Wedding" as they wrote the ending)

But overall this was a great book and I look forward to Amanda Trimbles next book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice Fluffy Read, December 21, 2006

This review is from: Singletini: A Novel (Paperback)
I have never read an Amanda Trimble novel before but while browsing for books at the bookstore the front cover of this book caught my eye.

Singletini is a nice quick read about a young woman currently in a crossroads of her life wondering whats next after her friends proceed to get engaged, get pregnant, and otherwise move on in their lives.

The twist in this novel is that the main protagnist gets fired from her boring job and proceeds to work as a wingwoman, someone who helps men meet other woman while out at clubs, restaurants, etc. While hiding her new job she someone also gets roped into being the personal attendant for her friend who is getting married. There were plently of laugh out loud moments and I loved the fact that for once a novel did not take place in New York, L.A. or the suburbs.
