The really good stuff is always hard to find,
By
This review is from: Singleton: A novel (Hardcover)
This book was recommended to me by a writer, and I always listen to his suggestions as he has never steered me wrong. Jack Cady was his mentor, and a kind of idol, and I figure any author revered by other authors has to be something special. And Jack Cady is. Too bad it took me so long to discover him, and now he's passed away.
Cady mostly wrote speculative fiction and short stories, but Singleton is a novel about a truck driver during the fifties. And you're thinking: boring! But it is anything but boring. Cady was a master of digging into people and their reasons and ways of doing things. He speaks in the vernacular and never loses that voice, though as a professor of literature he surely knew better. This is a novel about a guy who as a member of the coast guard, as a truck driver, spent his life running away from life and too late found out how much he missed. It is simple, it is profound and it is one of the best books I've ever read.

An honest and heartful story,

This review is from: Singleton: A novel (Hardcover)
This is one of Jack Cady's best books, and my favorite along with The Burning & Other Stories, and Tatoo. Jack is an honest, sincere writer, and this story is full of heart and soul. If you can find a copy, read it.
