DE'LICIOUS, DE'LIGHTFUL, DE'LOVELY! SINGPHONIKER'S CHRISTMAS CONTRIBUTION.

Those of you looking for something new and different, check out Die Singphoniker's warm-hearted and clear-eyed performance of Christmas favorites hailing from all over Europe from Catalonia through Norway with , naturally, many songs from Germany. Interspersed throughout the disc are three gently played harp solos by the skilled fingers of Irmgard Gorzawski.

Die Singphoniker is a six-man vocal group which has been in existence for 25 years and has made nearly 30 CD's. They have a wide-ranging repertoire from Gregorian chant to pop music. Unlike groups such as Chanticleer and King's Singers their vocal make-up is more bottom-heavy having two tenors at the top rather than the two altos that the two former groups have. However, the two tenors also double up on the alto when needed. On this particular disc there are two guest basses in addition to the harpist. The singers are: Alfons Brandl (tenor); Hubert Nettinger (alto/tenor)on this disc for the most part sings in the alto range and I must commend him for his ability to switch from falsetto to chest voice even in mid-phrase, with ease and without a hint of a gear-change AND with a lovely tone quality on both sides of the divide!; Ludwig Thomas (baritone); Michael Mantaj (bass-baritone); Christian Schmidt (bass); Willi Pirzer (bass); Berno Scharpf (baritone); and Irmgard the harpist.

The program consists of some familiar carols and some not so familiar, but all are arranged to please the ear and even the ones you might know are refreshingly unique. The only one that does not seem to fit the overall plan is the American carol by Jester Hairston "Mary's Boy Child".
