What a great performance of traditional hymns!

The sparse instrumentation, consisting mainly of an electronic organ and nothing else, enables the listener to fully concentrate on Patti Page's fine voice as well as the solemn lyrics and simple melody of some of the best-known traditional songs of praises ever written.

I have had the pleasure of having in my collection numerous CDs and tapes of traditional hymns. `Patti Page Sings America's Favorite Hymns' stands out by far as the best of the lot.

I bought "Patti Page Sings America's Favorite Hymns" because I was looking for recordings of hers I hadn't heard before. The selections in this album were recorded 35 years ago for Columbia Records. This is some of Patti's best work. These recordings are truly hidden treasures. Although it is difficult to choose a favorite selection, I particularly enjoyed "Nearer, My God, To Thee" and "God Be With You Till We Meet Again", partly because these songs were new to me. What I liked most about the album was the straight forward, clear way Patti sings these beautiful songs. With such a lovely voice, Patti is at her best when she is given good standard material to record. I can't imagine these songs sung better, by anyone.

Patti recorded these hymns in the 60s for Columbia. Her voice is clear and mellow. Her performances come from the heart and are among the most sincere I've experienced. As a singer of hymns myself I appreciate a performance which moves the spirit, which allows one to experience the power and presence of God and these do so marvelously. Patti is also a consummate storyteller/narrator and her performances of the 23rd psalm and Lord's Prayer are simply stated but truly inspiring.
