5.0 out of 5 stars A rare example of re-recordings bettering the originals, July 28, 2001

Like Roy Orbison, whose voice did not deteriorate over time, Ronnie Milsap's 1996 re-recordings of his 70s and 80s greatest hits is a quality release, presenting a singer still at his peak. For a performer with 40 country number one singles, Milsap is still relatively unappreciated. Yet his voice is among the greatest in music: capable of a variety of styles, with a tremendous vocal range. The recording of It Was Almost Like A Song on this CD is awesome in its thundering, almost-operatic finale. On a lighter note, Snap Your Fingers is an example of Milsap's playfulness - a supremely confident performance that is pure fun (listen to the final line he includes, not sung in the original hit version, as Milsap sings "look out old Milsap is back" in a great Mack The Knife take-off). While a new studio album of original material is awaited, a CD re-issue of his 1976 live in concert album is long overdue.

5.0 out of 5 stars Impressive Re-recordings, January 16, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Sings His Best Hits for Capitol Records (Audio CD)
This is an album of re-recorded material of some of his best. That means that you should not go into this cd expecting the originals. Any Day Now, Please Don't Tell Me How The Story Ends, and I Wouldn't Have Missed It For The World have been rejected in favor of Snap Your Fingers, Daydreams About Night Things, and Button Off My Shirt. However, it's still impressive! There are differences in each track! Stranger In My House is more upbeat and actually has an ending! It Was Almost Like A Song, a favorite song by Ronnie Milsap, features him being more independent on the final note and holding it even longer! If you think that noone over fifty years old(now sixty-six years old;happy birthday!)can hold the final note any longer than they had, just listen to it, and prepare to be overwhelmed! Daydreams About Night Things and Pure Love, both more favorites by him, are more upbeat. Smoky Mountain Rain and Lost In The Fifties Tonight are even longer; the former has more easy to spot differences. Button Off My Shirt has a different intro, and it's also on youtube! There's No Getting Over Me has different vocals and slightly different instrumentality, but other than that, what other difference is there? Is it the only track on here that ever got any radio airplay? The most easily reconized differences on here are on track three, Snap Your Fingers. Different instrumentality, different vocals, slightly changed lyrics, and a different ending are spelled out here. Fingers don't snap like they used to, and the words, "Look out, old Milsap is back!" are included. Before you buy this, get all the original recordings first, then do anything to get back again!

I wasn't a big country fan until Ronnie sang. I still am not a big country fan. I do enjoy listening to Love a Rainy Night. This shipped to me fairly
fast and was in very good condition. I would buy from this dealer again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Milsap revisits his greatest hits in 1996!, May 4, 2006
This review is from: Sings His Best Hits for Capitol Records (Audio CD)
After Ronnie Milsap's first album for Capital/Liberty Records became his first commercial flop in two decades, he recorded this follow-up in 1996 to fulfill his contract with Capital. Few artists have ever matched or surpassed the quality of their original hits when recording them again, but the always impressive Milsap manages to pull it off with this amazing CD! Most of these tracks sound remarkably like Ronnie's original versions right down to the instrumental backing and the vocal performances!

Milsap kicks things off with an awesome remake of "Stranger in my House" that rocks harder than the 1983 original. He incorporates a powerful new ending in this version, and the original recording cannot compete with this dynamic new performance in my opinion. It is the highlight of the entire CD! Ronnie's soulful and spirited remake of "Snap your Fingers" is also stronger than his hit version, and Ronnie's doo-wop classic "Lost in the 50's Tonight" is nearly identical to the 1985 recording.

"It was Almost like a Song" equals or betters the 1977 original as Milsap literally wails the final note of the song with the power and grace of an opera singer, proving without a doubt that Ronnie's stunning vocal range had not diminished one bit during the 90's. This particular song could be described as Milsap's "Bridge over troubled Water"...a glorious piano-driven pop ballad that climaxes in a dramatic, operatic high note that few pop singers besides Art Garfunkel or Roy Orbison could pull off. It is interesting how similiar the two songs are when you compare them, and they both rank among the finest pop ballads ever written.

Milsap fans will want to seek out the other greatest hits compilations where the original recordings of these tunes can be found, but this CD is still a great addition to anyone's collection! It offers definitive proof that Ronnie Milsap was still at the top of his form throughout the 90's, even if country radio refused to let it be known.
