A great Ducal tribute and one of Nina's finest,
By
This review is from: Nina Simone Sings Ellington! (Audio CD)
I don't know if I am white, much less nice, but I beg to differ with another reviewer. This is a superlative pick for fans of both Nina Simone and Duke Ellington. Billy Strayhorn's "Something to Live For" has seldom been performed with such pathos or power. And "Solitude": I wonder if Sathima Bea Benjamin listened to Nina's version before she recorded her own the following year. "I Like the Sunrise," from Ellington's Liberian Suite, is given a beautiful choral arrangement. Finally, you have to admire the inclusion of some rather offbeat material: "Hey, Buddy Bolden" (Clark Terry's feature on A Drum Is a Woman), "The Gal from Joe's," and "Merry Mending" (I'd never even heard of this tune before). A real gas listening to this album.

Nina Simone for "Nice, White Folks",
By BoogieJoy (U.S.A.) - See all my reviews

Just NOT Nina at her best. The best way to decsribe it is "over arranged". Very bland and schmaltzy, strings and all. It is as if she had an appearance booked for the the Pat Boone show and the record company wanted her to have something to promote that would go down well with that type of audience. She really never gets to dig in and do what she does best.
