3.0 out of 5 stars Uneven compilation..., July 28, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Sings the Great American Songbook (Audio CD)
This disc is only a fair intro to Miss Ella for those on a budget. There is no listing of where the twelve selections are drawn from. All I can say is there are a couple early live tracks that show their age, the rest vary with back up from combos to big band and strings. Ella duets with her lifelong friend Louie Armstrong on three tracks, but Louis is only listed on "A Foggy Day", so he comes out of nowhere! The best thing about the subtle remastering is that Ella's(or Louie's) solo voice is highlighted, otherwise the back up personnel take on a watery sound. A disjointed bio is included emphasizing more about the writers of the music than the artist is included. Oh! Ella's trademark scatting is nowhere to be found.
