genius singing and songwriting,
By cudgel (bristol, pa. USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Sings Nascimento (Audio CD)
elis is a fantastic, gutsy singer and she has sung some amazing songs from the likes of jobim and others, and this compilation has as many if not more spine tingling moments then even her greatest releases.i always found nascimentos songs a bit too involved, they never really got under my skin, but this changed that. "cais" is incredibly haunting "vera cruz" and "salt song" have great momentum and hooks that just steamroller over you. and as always, her voice tears at you with emotion, never over wrought, just enough. shudders! you rarely get this much for your overburdened c.d. dollar, what a shame that this disc has one of the ugliest covers i've ever seen and a truly unflattering picture of the otherwise beautiful elis regina.

Hey, I like the arrangements...this IS a masterpiece,

This is one of the great Elis albums. I do know where the reviewer below is coming from in criticizing the arrangements, but what one might call kitsch, I call wonderfully quirky and an charming support to the inimitable voice of Elis. (In fact, there is almost a tropicalia weirdness to some of the arrangements.) I picked up a used copy of this CD in an Amsterdam shop and treasure it. She was one of the greats and any true collector of Brazilian music cannot be without this collection of masterpiece-level recordings. God Bless Elis Regina.

a must-have for Ellis,

A hard to get in common shops, in Paris. Voice and music are awesome for all brazilian music lover. What a pity to get such a poor booklet. No credit for the musicians who played with or for her? Milton of course but who else? A young Jacques Morelenbaum? I would like to know they deserve it. Anyway get it. It will become a classic in your brazilian discoteca.
