Somewhere on the shelves among the many 78 rpm record albums I own is a rather beat up four record set of "Irene Dunne Sings Jerome Kern." For many years I have been on the lookout for a pristine copy of that set. No such luck. Luckily, at least, I had an LP from the 1980s from an independent label, Box Office, who reissued the Dunne album (which also includes Deanna Durbin in Can't Help Singing, Louanne Hogan in Centennial Summer, and Lily Pons in I Dream Too Much) "Jerome Kern in Hollywood, Vol. 2." However, even luckier is that this album has been re-released on Sepia Records "Irene Dunne Sings Kern and Other Rarities." But there's more! (Is this beginning to sound like one of those Acme commercials?) Included are several recordings that up to now were previously unreleased; songs such as "Make Believe" from Showboat, "The Folks Who Live on the Hill" from High, Wide and Handsome, and "If Love Were All" from The Secret of Madame Blanche. These recordings, as well as the others, sound fantastic for their age. All appear to be from Michael Feinstein's record collection (and boy, would I love to spend a week or so thumbing through his records while listening to other rarities).
As a child, my first encounter with Miss Dunne's work was through a television airing of I Remember Momma, which my mom insisted I watch. Although I have not seen that film since, I still remember crying at the end of the picture, reacting to Dunne's response to a passage from a book that her screen daughter had written and was reading. Later, I found out that this same dramatic actress was the same woman who had me in stitches with her comedic antics in My Favorite Wife, Theodora Goes Wild, and The Awful Truth. Then, when I was a teenager, I bought a pirate recording of the 1936 soundtrack of Show Boat.

I was in the middle of reading a biography of Irene Dunne when I learned this CD was to be released and couldn't wait to get it. I have been listening to it over and over, and Miss Dunne's artistry and musicality never fail to impress me. Old fashioned? Yes. Wonderful? You bet!!! Michael Feinstein's story about coaxing her to sing when she was older is very touching. I envy him that experience. Highly recommended for lovers of great singing, Jerome Kern and classic Hollywood musicals.

For as long as I can recall, I have hoped that someone would produce a CD of the work of the peerless Irene Dunne, and here it is and at such a fair price! To hear her cool soprano and conjure up that mischievous smile and warmth is sheer bliss. Dunne was a Jerome Kern girl and some of her studio recordings made in 1941 have been available before in a hideously expensive CD, but this one also contains previously unpublished gems such as "The Folks who live on the Hill" from "High, Wide and Handsome" and "Sing My heart" (without dialogue) from "Love Affair". These are really beautiful songs and her interpretations are memorable for Dunne was a great actress as well as a great singer. Top this with tracks from "Showboat", the highlight being her duet with Allan Jones of "I have the room above her" and you're in vocalist heaven.

Some of the recordings are not perfect due to the rarity of the source material but this is minor. The CD contains comprehensive notes and a charming story from Michael Feinstein of his encounter with an elderly Dunne. In fact, it is Feinstein who collected and preserved some of the these recordings so I am eternally grateful to him.

This CD is so special, I am sure I will be buying many copies to distribute to selected friends.

For those who have admired Irene Dunne this is a well done release with an informed and moving note written by Michael Feinstein. The performance and orchestrations reflect the past and are all the better for it. Irene Dunne was the most prolific interpreter of Jerome Kern's work on film. You can't go wrong with Kern and Dunne as either a souvenir of that past, or for the modern listener as part of a more complete education.
