Frank Sinatra Sings The Select Cole Porter is a fabulous CD of Frank singing some of the very best Cole Porter tunes. The CD has great artwork and the quality of the sound is excellent. This is a must have for Frank Sinatra fans and people who appreciate Cole Porter are going to like this album, too.

3.0 out of 5 stars review of used CD; frank sings cole
CD itself seems undamaged; however, carrying case had numerous cracks in it, implying to purchaser of higher likelihood that CD itself was not without damage. Appearances are IMPORTANT!!

"I've Got You Under My Skin" starts the CD with Sinatra swinging brightly to make this a very special number. The brass really works and the strings sound great; and the percussion and horns also help to mark the beat. Frank's voice is clear, strong and full of that ever-confident masculine warmth that made so many people love his singing. "I Concentrate On You" is a major highlight of this album; Frank again swings brightly to make this grand and he never sings a superfluous note! The brass shines and the number overall is remarkably upbeat and very positive. Frank sings this with lots of feeling and that enhances this ballad, too. Similarly, "What Is This Thing Called Love" is another spectacular number; Frank sings this slower tempo ballad with great sensitivity and I really like "What Is This Thing Called Love."

"You Do Something To Me" reverts to another positive tune that is rather splashy and glitzy; the signature Frank Sinatra charm and style carry him through this ballad and it all works so well; it's absolutely terrific. Frank was born to bat songs like this straight out of the ballpark; these songs showcase Cole Porter's and Sinatra's talents combined. "Anything Goes" features Frank squarely front and center--right where he belongs! "Anything Goes" still sounds great all these years later; this is a prime example of a classic pop vocal song. Great! There's also "Night And Day;" "Night And Day" is quite a love song that could never be forgotten and Frank does great justice to this tune with his excellent interpretation of "Night And Day."

"Just One Of Those Things" is absolutely flawless when Frank Sinatra sings it; and I truly believe that Frank's rendition of this tune is THE definitive rendition of this ballad. "I Love Paris" is from Can Can; and there's no shortage of talent here! Cole Porter's song gets the royal treatment from Frank Sinatra who never misses a beat; and "I Love Paris" is clearly a major highlight of this album.

"From This Moment On" is a song I first heard in Kiss Me Kate; and Frank sings this very well. Actually, the tempo is slowed down just a little bit and Frank swings gently to make this all his own! Frank really opens up and delves into this ballad to make an exquisite performance of it. In addition, "It's Alright With Me" sparkles like silver and gold combined when Frank gives this all his might; and that's wonderful. The CD also ends very well with Frank Sinatra singing "You're Sensational." "You're Sensational" is another fine ballad and it makes a strong ending for this album--especially with that lush musical arrangement that accompanies Frank's singing.

Overall, Frank Sinatra Sings The Select Cole Porter will appeal to many fans of Porter and Sinatra. This is a wonderful album and I wouldn't miss it!

With the current movie "Delovely" out, any serious Cole Porter fan must check out Old Blue Eyes Select Edition!. Everyone song here is top notch, but 6 are unsurpassed, without question the best versions ever done! They are (1) "I've Got You under My Skin" (usually ranking among the handful of top Frank songs), "What is this Thing Called Love", here done as a yearning ballad, (3) "Anything Goes", a real riot!,(4) "Just One Of Those Things", with one of the snappiest, trickiest arrangements ever! (5) a supercharged "Night and Day", and (6)"From this Moment On", perhaps a lesser known tune that completely blows away any other version I've heard! Top Frank and Nelson doing some of Mr. Porter's timeless best!

5.0 out of 5 stars IT'S GAS BABY!, May 23, 2002

Who cares if this cd is a package of PORTER's songs that SINATRA recorded during his years with CAPITOL?The important here is that you have a collection that you'll want to play often because it's a gasser.Try to find a better version of I'VE GOT YOU UNDER MY SKIN is virtually impossible. The added tracks are from the movies HIGH SOCIETY and CAN CAN.The fact that NELSON RIDDLE arranged and conducted all these songs tells a lot about his natural feeling for the music of COLE PORTER.FRANK has often said that he considered JUST ONE OF THOSE THINGS one of the trickest songs to sing.I've always liked MIND IF I MAKE LOVE TO YOU and YOU'RE SENSATIONAL because SINATRA sang them to GRACE KELLY in HIGH SOCIETY.Lucky fellow!

Cole Porter was one of the greatest songwriters of 20th century. Frank Sinatra was one of the greatest performers of 20th century. So, must I write more?

On this compilation you will find songs from Sinatra Sings For Swingin' Lovers (I've Got You Under My Skin, Anything Goes), High Society soundtrack (Mind If I Make Love To You, You're Sensational), A Swingin' Affair! (Night And Day, You'd Be So Nice to Come Home To, At Long Last Love, From This Moment On), Can-Can (I Love Paris, C'est Magnifique).

But even if you have all this albums, this one you should by too.

5.0 out of 5 stars Setting the record straight, February 23, 2002

This review is from: Sings Select Cole Porter (Audio CD)
"This CD contains the original 1953 version of "I've Got You under My Skin. That's the one that retains the intro with the incredible phrase "When I'm out on a quiet spree, fighting that old ennui" and the reference to cocaine--both of which were axed in the 1962 Neal Hafti-arranged cut."
Does the author of this review not know that the song she is writing about is "I Get a Kick Out of You"? Or was the review just poorly written?
Either way, I am not even sure how to address the opinion of the reviewer that has attacked this work. If there has ever been a singer that swung easier than Sinatra then I desperately encourage you to tell me who they might be. I suppose there will always be people who just don't get it. Going OVER THE TOP is not a trademark of Sinatra my friend. Knowing this I will simply say that with Sinatra it is hard to go wrong when he was singing in the 40-60's.
Ella was amazing but I see no evidence of her bettering Sinatra at his best. "Under my Skin".....Sinatra toys with.., "Kick out of you", Sinatra carries..."This Thing Called Love", Sinatra contemplates, "You Do Something To Me" Sinatra rides the waves....ect...ect...ect... Many experts have noted Sinatra's ability to internalize a song and make it his own. You do not see this ability very often!

5.0 out of 5 stars Frankly speaking, an excellent effort, August 7, 2006

If you have all of Frank Sinatra's classic Capitol albums (1953-1961)then you won't NEED this CD since all the tracks can be found on his studio albums and soundtrack albums of this period. On the other hand, you will WANT it for it sure is convenient to have all of these great Cole Porter songs on one CD.

I first purchased this on LP many years ago, one of the first Sinatra LPs I purchased, and dubbed it onto a reel-to-reel tape for frequent listening. At the time, I didn't realize that this was an anthology cobbled together by Capitol to have some new product to compete with the new Reprise recordings.

Cole Porter is my favorite pop standard composer (along with Johnny Mercer) and Sinatra sings Porter better than anyone, so I was glad to buy this album, whatever the motivation for putting it out. "Night And Day" is probably my favorite song on the CD but I love every song on it and so will you. The CD has some additional tracks not on the original LP release so even if your vinyl is in good shape (like mine), you'll probably buy this disc, if you can find it

5.0 out of 5 stars Frank Sinatra, Cole Porter and Nelson Riddle at their best., June 17, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Sings Select Cole Porter (Audio CD)
I first bought this album as an LP in l963 or 1964. It was recorded in Mono. Capitol Records later made a lame attempt to electronically enhance it to stereo. Today's CD version includes four songs not on the original. Despite not being recorded in stereo, this fine collection sounds clean and clear. This was the first Sinatra album I ever bought and is still my most favorite. I actually wore out that first LP and hence bought the enhanced "stereo" version. You will listen to this CD mmany many times.

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic Sinatra, November 27, 2011
I have had this album for a long time and enjoy listening to it every time. The song selection is good with frank in great voice. The 50's were a big time for Sinatra in the songs he recorded with capital records. This cd and songs are mainly from the capital years area I believe with many of them he performed in concerts regularly until his retirement. Some slow songs but mainly nice up tempo tunes that with have you swinging. A must for every serious Sinatra fan.
