Editorial Reviews

2009 expanded edition of the Scottish artist's album including seven bonus tracks: two from the original sessions ('Green Grow the Rashes O' and 'Of A' the Airts'), four from 2007's Peacetime ('Ye banks And Braes', 'Aye Waukin O', 'Leezie Lindsay' and 'Dainty Davie') and one brand new recording, 'Comin' Thro The Rye/Dram Behind the Curtain'. The year 2009 marks the 250th anniversary of Robert Burns' birth. To commemorate this very special anniversary, Eddi will be re-releasing her landmark 2003 album, which introduced a whole new generation to the work of Scotland's national poet, Robert Burns. Her flawless and emotive voice combined with the beautiful strings of the Royal Scottish National Orchestra brought a new vitality to the songs of Burns that continues to thrill and excite listeners, new and old. Rough Trade.

Eddi has a great voice and it shows on this CD. It will not be for everyone but for those looking for a bit of Traditional Scottish music this CD is a great choice.

Good transaction overall, my only negative was that the delivery time was too long. True it was within the deadline posted by the Seller but still, I find more than 3 weeks for a CD from the US to Canada to be too long. But other than that, item was as described.

I found a copy of this CD at a shop in Kuala Lumpur last year. Delighted to hear Eddi Reader's magical voice again. I know nothing about the original versions of the songs of Robert Burns, but Eddi's singing makes them all sound lovely. I've been a fan of hers since her first album in the early 90s and I'm very happy that she is still putting out quality music. I only wish more listeners would "discover" her scintillating songs.

I first heard Eddi Reader's thrilling voice, singing, "Jamie, come try me!" on Acousticity, a folk music program on WGLT. I had to get the CD and fell in love with her renditions of Robert Burns's songs and the Scottish folk tradition. She has a couple contemporary folk tunes on this CD, too. After hearing this, I got everything she sings, including the earlier Fairground Attraction CD, The First of a Million Kisses, on which she sings. There are traditional and contemporary tunes also on Peacetime.

Eddi Reader, Scottish Folkstress and former lead singer with 'Fairground Attraction', produces an album of pure beauty, surpassing all she has done before. On this, she sings the songs of 'Robert Burns', Scotland's much loved poet and balladeer. Each song is carefully arranged around lush string arrangements complimenting Reader's perfect interpretation. You can tell that this album was lovingly nourished and thoroughly enjoyed by Reader and her collaborators through it's production. On this delux edition, you get an additional 7 tracks that fit nicely with the original selection. My initial favourites are 'Wild Mountainside', 'Ae Fond Kiss', 'My Love Is Like A Red Red Rose' and 'Winter It Is Past', but it is difficult to pick favourites from this as each song has it's own quality. Thoroughly recommended, albums like this don't come along too often.
