Perfect Folk Music in Any Language, June 2, 2002
This review is from: Singt Volkslieder (Audio CD)
If you miss the days of folk music in the early 1960's/late 1950's here in America, and don't mind that the songs here are all in German (with the lyrics, which is nice if you have a dictionary), this album will make you happy. I have had this record for about a month and when I first got it I was listening to it over and over and over and over again and I think it will always be one of my dear and favorite records.
If you've never heard German folk songs, this is an excellent introduction to some of the most poignant and charming (and famous), each sung perfectly, with exactly the right accompaniment (guitar, mandolin, etc. - not "oom-pah" music, if I haven't made that clear yet). Wader has a versatile voice, and sings with sensitivity, a deep respect for the songs, and love. The first song ("Roses in December" in English) is the only recently composed song, and may be taken as an introduction to the rest - "so many old songs belong and my life..."
