Story
In the dark, Cold War winter of 1949-50 Stalin, the brutal leader of the Soviet Union, had two super weapons: long range missiles and the atomic bomb. But even if his teams of forced labor managed to build a missile powerful enough to carry an atomic payload, Stalin still faced encirclement by the United States and the Strategic Air Command. He knew that he needed another advantage over the United States, one that would ensure Soviet security and superiority. Then came the chance discovery on the remote island of Katorga-12 off the wild Kamchatka peninsula, of a previously unknown material, Element 99 (E99). E99 became the new source of Stalin's hope: a new energy source of unparalleled power. Unfortunately, the new element also yielded a new kind of contamination risk. But these were acceptable risks to Stalin - anything for the advancement of the Soviet people. Even so, on September 21, 1950, driven to complete the project, and in violation of the safety protocols, a Russian scientist, Viktor Barisov, personally triggered a device powered by E99 that caused a catastrophic event that affected the entire island. What happened next is unclear. However, there are reports that Stalin's final dying order was a handwritten scrawl to quarantine Katorga-12. And so the knowledge of the island remained buried...until 2010, when intelligence reports in the west confirm activity on a remote atoll in the Russian Federation's shadow. The world has no memory of Katorga-12. No concept of what may be on the island off the southeast coast of Russia. It is deemed that the world can't afford another Chernobyl - or worse. America's answer is to scramble a stealth flyby of the area. They need recon - and they need it now.

Gameplay and Weapons
Action in Singularity is a mix of combat mission gameplay and puzzle-solving. Combat is against both modern and 50s era Russian forces, as well enemies mutated through exposure to E99. In this players have their choice of conventional weapons including: pistols, shotguns, machine guns, sniper rifles, rocket launchers, etc., as well as as few Sci-Fi weapons very specific to the game. These include the TMD (Time Manipulation Device) and the E99 pistol. The TMD is a gauntlet, which players acquire early in the game that can be integrated with conventional weapons. Its main function though relates it its ability to alter time within a small specific area. The major examples of this are:

Reversion - The ability to alter encounters by rewinding the history of an item or entity to the time of your choosing. This can be used to repair broken items, render enemies harmlessly embryonic, etc.
Aging - The ability to alter encounters by fast-forwarding the history of objects or entities, rendering the former rusted and worn and the latter decrepit with age or simply dust.
Stasis - The ability to freeze time and thus dangerous situations in order to gain an advantage.
Impulse - The ability to propel objects frozen in time in a targeted direction.
Chronolite - Functionality that allows the player to look back to a time associated with a place, person or object.
Players can also utilize the TMD in conjunction with the E99 pistol, a gun that shoots bullets infused with Element 99, to hit targets unreachable due to distance and otherwise indestructible cover. In addition, to the TMD's combat uses, it is also indispensable as a tool for solving the spatial-oriented and other types of puzzles that players will face on the island of Katorga-12.

Multiplayer
Singularity contains multiplayer gameplay options, that just as in its single player campaign, integrate conventional combat tactics and weapons with the time manipulation elements.

Key Features

  • An engrossing storyline blending Cold War history and science fiction elements.
  • An arsenal of first-person weapons, including conventional firearms and upgradeable, time altering gadgets.
  • Mission progressing puzzle-solving gameplay.
  • Advanced graphics built on the Unreal 3 game engine.
  • Multiplayer gameplay options.
  • Xbox LIVE support including LIVE Achievements.

Fun:
This review might read a little strange because I am going to list a lot of things wrong with the game, then tell you to buy it anyway. The long and short of it is that Raven Software, a group of developers who have been making FPS games for almost two decades, really liked Bioshock. A lot.

While Raven's previous titles from recent years were very old-school, Quake 4 even still having floating weapon pick-ups, Singularity plays much more like a modern console FPS game. Singularity is slow-paced, has various sections that concentrate more on light puzzle-solving than shooting and even long stretches just added for atmosphere. Speaking of atmosphere, the game has it in spades... great environments, cool effects, audio and written logs, films, music, the works. The game uses the Unreal Engine 3 as well, though it has brighter colors and more vibrant environments than many games that use the same engine. Does it sound like Bioshock yet? Okay, how about this: you get special powers that you upgrade and add new abilities to by spending an in-game currency. Warm yet? How about: the game is mostly linear, but has some side paths you can travel for more pick-ups.

What I am driving home here is that Raven might as well of called this Bioshock 3. The UE3 engine, the vibrant colors, the pick-ups, the powers, the slower pace, the light puzzles... everything is influenced by Irrational Games' underwater masterpiece. This makes it a very easy game to review though, because basically if you want another Bioshock then get this game. It is polished and does the Bioshock style well, and the storyline and location... a Russian experimental weapons base you visit long after a disaster of epic proportions, ruined, dark and wet just like Bioshock's Rapture... are well presented.

The negatives of the game lie mostly in the port to PC. Though Raven were a PC-focused developer all the way through Quake 4 a few years ago, Wolfenstein and now Singularity are both console ports. The FOV is limited, making you feel a bit claustrophobic, and the interface and control methods are all designed with consoles first in mind. One particular annoyance is that the "use" command and the "reload" command are both tied to the same key, meaning if you have a preferred command setup something is likely not going to be where you want, and of course hitting "use" off-target will reload your weapon when you don't want to. Instead of using a different key for each power like a PC game would the game puts all your powers on a few inputs, making you press a key for one thing, hold it for another, or similar things. There is even an auto-aim option in the menu that is on by default!

None of those console port issues are game-breaking by any means, just minor annoyances, but the console port nature of this title DOES ruin the multiplayer. No text chat, no dedicated servers and a low player count... what is there might be decent, but with actual PC multiplayer games on the market why would you play it? The answer is: you won't.

And yet despite all the stolen inspiration, despite all the console port issues, despite the useless multiplayer, I am going to give this game a 4 out of 5. Why? Simply because it is a very fun and impressive looking shooter! That is what you would buy the game for I assume, and that is what Singularity is. At high resolutions and with AA forced through your video card's control panel the game looks very, very good, and the mouse control is smooth and polished. The action is very well done, the guns feel and work great, the powers are fun, the difficulty is just right... Singularity is a damn good game.

Just don't call it original.

Fun:
I liked it! I'm an 'old school' FPS buff (as in HalfLife, Doom, etc.), and although there was really 'nothing new' - it's just what I wanted: first person shooter with a few interesting twists, good enough weaponry, great graphics, same ol' monster types. Yeah. I spent good money on other games I thought were 'FPS' (example: Dead Space - boooorinng)... but didn't do proper research (my bad) to find out they WEREN'T. So, for my money... this fit the bill. AND (now that I know how to use some of the stuff), I'll play it again in a few weeks. A few bugs: I had to 'Alt/Tab' back to desktop, hit 'speaker mix' and pull Singularity volume up every time I restarted that game. It was default set much too low. Also: graphics 'video' auto-downgraded several times toward the end of the game... had to reset in 'options' (I have excellent card/system). Overall: fun. Recommend to those who really like real FPS-ers.

I've read reviews from Ign & Gamespot basically ~ denouncing the story ~

It's basically bioshock w/ a USSR spin ~ which isn't that bad & the Soviet Empire wasn't all that good ~
Reminded Me of a mesh of bio-shock, Dark sector, blinx, & half-life 2 ~
~ I found this game fresh-er/more interesting than bioshock 2 ~ which the critics were probably more lenient w/ ~ (Bioshock 2 was an interactive improvement to 1 & was a captivating story, like the 1st ~ mayb more so than singularity ~ just recently completed BS 2~ can't wait for infinite )

If U ~ yeah U ~ enjoyd bioshock esp. ~ there's something 2 b had w/ this game ~
I have no problem recommending it ~ it's story seems more interesting than campy ~ thus far ~ just meet w/ the ~ truth ~ agency

The forboding noises & prowling, leaping monstrosities, & it does seem ~ Russians luvd 2 experiment, adds that resident evil sense, to the mix ~

Btw ~ not all sellers include the graphic novel ~ :-(
