5.0 out of 5 stars Robby Krieger Revisits The Doors July 2, 2010
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
The mark of a good poet is to be able to hold your attention by the power of his words. Likewise, the mark of a great musician is to hold your interest with the power of his music alone, sans words. Jim Morrison, in an interview was asked what would happen to The Doors if he had to go to jail, he said he hoped they would go on and do instrumentals. In "Singularity" Robby Krieger does just that.

Why am I referencing Jim Morrison and The Doors in a review of Robby Krieger's solo work? Because Krieger references The Doors in "Singularity." Krieger is able to revisit The Doors without compromising the integrity of new material. Krieger has mentioned the inspiration for "Singularity" is a painting he did (which is used on the CD cover) of the event horizon of a black hole, the point at which light can't escape and falls back in on itself. As such, the songs do seem to fall back on to the various influences in Krieger's career. Besides the obvious Doors references, he has an homage to John Coltrane, and revisits his roots with with flamenco and slide guitar explorations.

At its best a Doors song could give the listener the feeling of traveling, or that the music was taking you on a journey. "Let It Slide" is able to incorporate that feeling. "Let It Slide" has little ribbons of "Moonlight Drive" interspersed in it. Which is not obvious at first. It seems familiar, but you're not sure why, and then as the song plays out, it slowly occurs to you what's going on in the music.

Krieger also takes a crack at reimagining Doors songs that he was instrumental in. In his previous solo CD "Cinematix" Krieger reworked and reimagined "Peace Frog", which started life as a Doors instrumental (when they played "Peace Frog" live they usually played it as an instrumental) as "War Toad.

5.0 out of 5 stars At last, maybe Robbie Krieger will get his due! January 16, 2011
Format:Audio CD
I saw Krieger do these tunes live at the Grammy Museum. A brilliant performance. This guy wrote major hits and (to my way of thinking) never really got the credit he deserved. I hope this album puts him in the spotlight he has deserved for so long. Here's hoping for a Grammy win.

4.0 out of 5 stars Robby Kreiger Gives It Up! May 22, 2011
Format:Audio CD
This is a brilliant album full of great creative music. The sound is that of a: Rock/Jazz style, along with Classical Flamenco that is truly artful! You will also hear some of that awesome Blues style slide guitar that Robby made famous with THE DOORS as well. My favorite tracks are:"EVENT HORIZON", "TRANE RUNNING LATE","LET IT SLIDE","COFFIN DODGER" and "SOLAR WIND". However, make no mistake, all of the jams on this album are solid! Robby's guitar playing is extraordinary(He really gives it up on that gibson sg),and so are all of the compositions on this great release. His guitar solo's on: "EVENT HORIZON" shows why he is one of my all-time favorite guitar players. His playing on that track is so smooth and fluid, yet groovin', with a rockin' element in the sound and style! I can't get enough of his playing on that jam. Robby Kreiger has released a work of art that is really worth a listen. This album is played in the same concept of the great Miles Davis classic album:"A TRIBUTE TO JACK JOHNSON". In Robby's version,it's smooth contemporary Jazz, meets classic Rock. Musicianship at It's best.

Very nice guitar work by the guitarist from the DOORS. Watched Robby and his group live in 2012 and it was a great show.
