More About the Author

Since childhood, well-known author and editor Bruce M. Caplan of Redmond, Washington, has been intrigued by the mysteries of what really happened to Titanic's passengers and crew on the morning of April 14-15, 1912.

In 1996 Caplan was urged to edit and re-issue 20th Century journalist Logan Marshall's book titled, "The Sinking of the Titanic and Great Sea Disasters", published within weeks of the ship's sinking. Caplan shortened the title to "The Sinking of the Titanic."

Caplan has spoken throughout our country about some of the disaster's lesser-known particulars, including the fact that from the moment the great ship left Southampton there was a raging coal fire in bunker number 6. He contends that this fire could have contributed to Titanic's sinking."

Caplan has spoken about Titanic to school children throughout our nation. Most recently he was in Las Vegas for Nevada Reading Week. During the 1980's Bruce was a hospital comedian cheering up children suffering from leukemia. For two years on a weekly basis, he went room to room telling jokes and stories to the kids.

During the past two years he's been lecturing on a dozen cruises where he has related all the aspects of the fascinating saga that unfolded almost a century ago. Caplan loves his audience and he delights in educating them about his favorite subject - the Titanic!

5.0 out of 5 stars A must read for all Titanic Buffs!, February 7, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: The Sinking of the Titanic (Paperback)
This book is an abridged edition of the Logan Marshall volume that was the very first book to roll off the presses after the Titanic sank. Although some of the details are incorrect, most of the facts are true and the first-hand accounts from survivors at the time are fantastic! The coal-fire on the Titanic is discussed in great detail and and many other important facts which have been ignored by more contemporary sources are also illuminated. With 16 pages of 1912 photos and wonderful descriptions, I found this narrative to be a good beginning for all those interested in the saga of the Titanic.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Titanic Book I've Ever Read!, March 17, 2002

This review is from: The Sinking of the Titanic (Paperback)
I really enjoyed this book. The authors descriptions bring the tragedy to life. The idea that the Titanic was on fire before it left England fascinated me. I've read more than 20 books about the Titanic, and I think this one is the best!

2.0 out of 5 stars Melodramatic, but interesting to see the 1912 perspective, September 7, 1998
This review is from: The Sinking of the Titanic (Paperback)
I picked up Marshall's book after reading other reader's reviews on Amazon, impressed by how glowing they were. I must say I was a bit disappointed. While the book certainly is dramatic, it has many incorrect facts about the ship, as well as the sinking. I did enjoy finding out how the disaster was looked at by some during 1912, but the writing was too "flowery" (symptomatic of the times), and some of the errors were jolting. All in all, it's a good book to have if you're a Titanic buff, but if you're looking for a single book to fill you in on the disaster, this would probably not be your best choice. (For a detailed, well researched account, I would go with the old standby, Walter Lord's "A Night to Remember".)
