This sound has been done to death in the past 5 years and the fact that MTV and radio continue to shove it down our throats is just horrible when there are so many more deserving bands with diverse sounds. 5.0 out of 5 stars Less nu, more metal, September 23, 2005
This review is from: Sinner (Audio CD)
This Texas quartet's decision to make a nu-metal album which was less nu-metal than regular heavy metal was a wise one. "Sinner" not only went platinum, but it appealed to fans outside of the nu-metal genre. Drowning Pool don't bother with the trendy hip-hop vocals; this is a band which rocks in old-school fashion, with heavy, gut-punching riffs. "Sinner" is also different from other nu-metal records, because frontman Dave Williams not only writes somewhat intelligent and introspective lyrics, but his vocal styles are also quite good; he sings, growls, howls and bellows equally as well.

"Bodies" is Drowning Pool's most famous song, so it's obviously a stand out track, here. The verses are melodic, and they lead in, nicely, to the chorus, which is very cathartic. This song's chorus ("Let the bodies hit the floor!") is one of the most irresistably catchy chrouses I've heard, and this song is one of the best mosh-pit anthems I have ever heard. Elsewhere, "Tear Away" is a memorable, sing-along song about self-absorption, the title track has another chunky main riff and a very catchy chorus, "Reminded" has a good vocal hook alongside more mosh-worthy riffs and a huge chorus, "Pity" has choppy, surging, almost skipping riffs, "Mute" ties together good, melodic singing with wah-wah guitars, and "Sermon" is a heavy yet depressing tune about spiritual emptiness and needing God ("Where was God when I needed a friend?").

This album is full irresistible hooks, energy, intensity, excitement, and power. It is essential listening for all mosh-metal fans, rage rock fans, and nu-metal fans. And "Sinner" is heavy enough to make you a Drowning Pool fan even if you don't like nu-metal. Do yourself a favor: buy this album, and honor Dave's passing by playing it loud!

4.0 out of 5 stars Drowning Pool's Debut into the Nu-metal scene, September 27, 2006
By
This review is from: Sinner (Audio CD)
The first time I ever heard of Drowning Pool was during a WWF live event in 2004 when their song 'Bodies' headlined a LIVE wrestling event. I found the song to be catchy and a cleverly designed song. So I went ahead earlier this year and purchased the entire album 'Sinner' from Amazon.com. After listening to this delightful album a number of times it is time for me to share my feelings on this nu-metal band.

Firstly the artwork is pretty interesting and different. The girl looks alittle like Amy Lee of Evanescence at first. The scope of the album pretty much matches the artcover, the mood of this album ranges from discussing religion in earnest in the first song 'Sinner' to relationships in 'All Over Me' and 'Reminded'. The better songs of this album are 'Bodies', 'Mute' and 'Follow'. 'Bodies' quickly became a moshpit favourite in concerts and dancefloors and 'Follow' became a BBQ song to be played with a loop with friends.

Drowning Pool is a band with promise. The band had a death in the lead singer after this album so this album pretty much is the original sound of Drowning Pool. The later albums have a new sound and atmosphere. (See my Desensitized review). I like this Drowning Pool sound best.

Fans of Staind, Linkin Park, Godsmack and Dishwalla will like the offerings of this album. Check it out, you will be surprised to find you like the songs and the sound of Drowning Pool's debut album.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nu metal at it's best, June 2, 2006
This review is from: Sinner (Audio CD)
I love Drowning Pool. Even if I am a metalhead(Kataklysm, Nile, In Flames, Dark Throne, Dimmu Borgir etc) I still love this band. The leader singer just...to put it bland...rocks! His voice never gets annoying like a few bands(Otep, Limp Bizkit, Audioslave) Great CD. Now here's the track by track.

1. Sinner - 5/5 - Used to be my favorite. Lost interest but still deserves a 5/5 because the song is so beautifully played.
2. Bodies - 3/5 - Overrated too much. The chorus gets on my nerves horribly but I'll listen to it every once and a while
3. Tearing Away - 5/5 - Awesome song. That guitar sounds pretty clean and nice. You gotta download this if you don't have the CD
4. All Over Me - 4/5 - Great track but the chorus lyrics are stupid.
5. Reminded - 4/5 - Pretty good song. Love that intro.
6. Pity - 5/5 - Awesome song. I like the "served on a plate...for all of you to eat" Second best song on this CD
7. Mute - 2/5 - Meh...snore. Not worth downloading if you must download the cd.
8. I Am - 1/5 - Horrible. Bad. The musicianship is good but the singing is gross. It's like the lyrics faded out.
9. Follow 10/5 - This is why this Cd gets 5 stars. Because of this song. This song is just...F#$%%ING GREAT! You MUST have this!
10. Told You So - 5/5 - Love the intro. Good song, telling everyone to shut up.
11. Sermon - 4/5 - Sounds to me like a religious song in the beginning. I don't believe in a god(no I'm not a satanist, I'm an evolutionist) and well that's what ruins it. Other then that it's pretty good.

One thing about this CD is how the lyrics get worse over time. Start at Sinner then skip to I Am and Follow. Then go back to Sinner. See the difference? Yeah that pissed me off. If you need to download this album, save your hardrive space by only downloading: "Follow" "Sinner" "Reminded" "Tearing Away" "Pity" and "Told You So"

Overall it's a great nu-metal CD...coming from a metal head!

4.0 out of 5 stars That Other's Reviewer's Pedantic Bullsh..., February 21, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Sinner (Audio CD)
If you are on Amazon purchasing music, you're likely a casual consumer like myself looking for a new sound. I heard the song "Bodies" on my local rock radio station, liked it, and found that this entire Sinner CD holds up to the energy of that song. It's Solid.

I have no idea why the other reviewer hopped on Amazon to write his intense 'music review' (i'm being kind). Ignore his/her pedantic bullsh... and enjoy this CD. :)

5.0 out of 5 stars Give and Take, June 15, 2005
This review is from: Sinner (Audio CD)
That's really the process we went through. Drowning Pool arrived on the scene with this extremely powerful and intense metal record, lead by the anthem "Bodies". Track after track of this masterpiece is pure unrelenting heavy metal. I've listened to this album so many times and haven't found a hint of filler. CJ's guitar brings both gritty power chords and seething wah solos. Songs like "Sinner", "Reminded", and "Told you So" are fast crushers, while "Mute" and "Tear Away" bring a slow grind. "Tear Away" is one of my favorites, especially with the line "God damn i love me" delivered so cool it's one of my favorite lyrics. Dave Williams was truly a force to be reckoned with. Sadly, that was where Take came in, as in August of 2002, we lost one of the best voices in music. It's truly sad to lose someone like Dave, bringing strength and power to music, yet being one of the nicest guys you could meet. Dave will be forever missed, but also thanked for giving us such a great metal album. "Sinner" will always be one of the best metal albums out there.

5.0 out of 5 stars Drowning Pool Rocks!, October 18, 2005
This review is from: Sinner (Audio CD)
When I first listened to this album, it was about a year ago. I didn't really get into it too much, but soon I realized that those songs I heard, I wanted to hear them again! I saw the videos for " Bodies" and " Tear Away" and I was very impressed. I kinda kicked myself for not recognizing the awesome album that I had borrowed from my sister, "Sinner" by Drowning Pool. I recently purchased the album and it is one of my favorites. Dave Williams was an awesome guy, even though I never met him, I have heard nothing but good things about him, and the way he sang, is truly awesome. He sang with emotion, feeling, and was the perfect mix of hardcore metal vocals and melodic metal vocals. He could sing, but he could also take care of the metal growls as well. The rest of the band, C.J., Stevie, and Mike, are awesome as well. C.J.'s driving and intense guitar riffs, plus the rhythm section of Stevie and Mike is one of the best in modern metal. I like all the songs on the album, but my favorite is " Told You So". The song starts off with an awesome riff and the chorus is constantly playing in my head. " Told Me!! Told You!! Shut-up!!" Just a classic metal fist-pumping song. My other favorite is " Tear Away" which is one of the best rock songs I've ever heard. It's a very addicting song, you just want to hear it over and over again. Overall, this is an awesome metal record, one that you will definately want to purchase if you are a fan of the metal genre. I'm hoping Ryan McCombs will be able to lead the band back to metal greatness, and that they will be able to release an awesome record with Ryan as well. I like Jason Jones, I think he is a good metal singer, I guess he just had other plans musically, and wanted to pursue other goals when he left Drowning Pool. So, check out this debut record from Drowning Pool, you will definately not be disappointed. Rock on Drowning Pool, and R.I.P. Dave!! You rock man!!

5.0 out of 5 stars My first CD by the Best Band on this planet!, May 26, 2003

"drowningpoolfan" (Bensville, NSW Australia) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Sinner (Audio CD)
Drowning Pool definitely doesn't suck. Limp Bizkit were good but Drowning Pool is better. People think that their self-titled demo is better, but deep down, it isn't, this is better.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
1)Sinner(2:27): This song makes a great opener for a quickie. One of my favourites too. Dave must've been really angry when he wrote this song. Definitely a 10/10.

2)Bodies(3:21): Drowning Pool's first hit. And it's pretty damn good too. "Let The Bodies Hit The Floor", it completely rules. 10/10

3)Tear Away(4:14): Drowning Pool's second hit, better than Bodies by far. This song was on Wrestlemania X8. 10/10

4)All Over Me(3:12): Well, not as good as the first 3, but better than some other songs. An original song. 7/10

5)Reminded(3:24): Another fav of mine. this is what Limp Bizkit's Hold On tried to be. Simply one of the best. 10/10

6)Pity(2:52): NICE! This is another of my favs, with great riffs from C.J. Pierce and Stevie Benton. Another classic which everyone will consider the best. 10/10

7)Mute(3:19): Not bad, but unfortunately worse than All Over Me. This is just an opinion though. 5/10

8)I Am(3:49): Well, this isn't bad, but it gets a 9 instead of a 10 because it's been on every CD Drowning Pool made. 9/10

9)Follow(3:20): Another of my fav's. This was on the soundtrack of Tony Hawks Pro Skater 3. And it was cool. Better than Reminded. 10/10

10)Told You So(3:05): The only song with a swear word in it. Pretty good. 8/10

11)Sermon(4:19): My favourite song on here Hands-Down! This is anti-religious and the heaviest on here. I like the part: "Ladies and Gentlemen etc" The Best, including the backward masking at the end. 10/10+

Drowning Pool are the best. Rest In Peace Dave Williams.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sinner, January 29, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Sinner (Audio CD)
I you are looking for a CD with attitude, then this one's for you, there are four members of this band who work together perfectly, there are slight variations to each track with interesting guitar solos, melodies and an angry vocalist who seems as though he hates everyone and everything, with so much power and aggression within the CD, Drowning Pool have produced an eleven track CD that is interesting and at the same time becomes more enjoyable with every listen.

With the bands like 'Limpbizkit', 'Linkin Park', 'Deftones', 'Static X', 'Disturbed' and 'Papa Roach' who are all going round the circuit and getting massive media attention, Drowning Pool have released a CD that people at the moment want to hear.

The CD starts off with the title track 'Sinner', that consists of power cords and hard hitting drum beats with a melodic chorus, which then quietly disappears, then out of the blue we get a sentence repeated four times "Let the bodies hit the floor", which then rips into your ears with so much aggression it leaves you breathless, 'Bodies', what a track, if this song doesn't do anything to you then you must be dead. This is the track that will probably get all the attention, but at the same time it's a track that will never be over played.

With every track you get a mixture of the above-mentioned bands, with a touch of 'Stabbing Westwood' thrown in for good measure. As well as 'Bodies', there are also wonderful tracks like 'Tear Away', 'All Over Me', 'Reminded', 'Mute' and 'Sermon' that fills you with so much excitement that you find it hard to control yourself. Wonderful.

10/10

This band has some of the most immature and cliche lyrics I've ever heard, usually only writing 20 lines a song and repeating the chorus over and over!! If this is the future of metal, that bands just copy Korn with a touch of lite-grunge rock thrown in, then it it should be no surprise when metal is seen as a joke again, and thats sad as I love metal and its Korn klone bands like this that give the whole scene a bad name!! Avoid this album and band at all costs.

1.0 out of 5 stars Another horrible nu-metal band!!!, October 10, 2001

Just when you think there will be no more un-original nu-metal garbage coming out, along comes an album as shallow as this. A friend of mine gave me this cd, she said she didn't want it as she hated all but maybe 2 songs on it. I gave it a fair listen as I'm into many different types of music, but I can find nothing good or original about this band!! The riffs are very simple and repetitive, and the lyrics are about the dumbest I've ever heard, and I've heard thousand of bands!!! I was familiar with the "Bodies" single and hated that, and thought maybe there would be better songs to be found on the album, but they are all boring and repetitive just like that song, play a few simple riffs and repeat about ten lines in each song is the theme of the album. Go listen to better bands like Dillinger Escape Plan and Dream Theater for some truly innovative music!!! Avoid Staind also!!!
