Editorial Reviews

Rock icon Joan Jett, the original riot grrrl, is back. as co-founder of the all-girl, straight-up rock and roll group the Runaways, Joan cracked the door for female artists to rock just as hard as the boys. Joan Jett will keep her fire burning with the release of Sinner on her own Blackheart Records. As veterans of the punk scene, it's only natural that Joan Jett and the Blackhearts will perform on the Vans Warped Tour 2006, as well as their own tour dates in support of the upcoming release.

Joan Jett and rock 'n' roll go hand in hand. This CD, by far is some of Jett's BEST yet. The CD's first single/video "A.C.D.C." features the lovely Ms. Jett and the sexy Carmen Electra, "Riddles" pokes fun at President Bush and his Administration, a "wake up people" call for the country, "Change The World" is for the planet, and much more.

Jett has survived rock 'n' roll's harshness. And now, she brandishes it as a weapon. This woman is ROCK 'N' ROLL. A good CD, a good buy for any music fan. Enjoy.

After ten years without a new CD, Joan Jett triumphantly returns to rock and roll with SINNER. (Ten years if you do not count her Japan-only release NAKED. Several of the songs on NAKED can be found here.) Joan not only looks great but sounds fantastic! This one's a rocker and you need to get it!

The first track is RIDDLES. It is a war protest song about war and our loss of freedoms. At one point, Ms. Jett shouts WAKE UP PEOPLE! This is something I have been shouting for some time now. (Sadly, as long as Americans have their gas-guzzling SUV's and their cell phones, nothing else seems to matter.)

The best song by far is A.C.D.C. This one kicks. Have you seen the video with Carmen Electra? Hot!

Joan seems more and more comfortable with her sexuality here. I am sure you can guess what that sexuality is. She is not preachy - she just asks why do people care?

Finally, her remake of A 100 FEET AWAY (from ALBUM) is a nice inclusion. And it's always great to hear FETISH!

-- by far, the best recording she's done in years...

... her efforts and commitment to make it happen are admirable, as seen in the included video...

... in contrast with several bands of the 80s, returning or rejoining to remake their old hits, joan keeps on writing new music... very good music indeed!

... get it now, you won't regret it...

... cheers!

I will abide by Amazons guidelines & not criticize a particular reviewer.
"Sinner" has very few weak spots & I also like the contrast between the rockers & the slower songs. I especially liked the re-make of "100 Ft. Away". I have seen Joanie touring behind every album, even her first, and
regardless of the crowd/club, she holds nothing back. High spots include
"A.C.D.C", Riddles, Watersign, Baby Blue, Everyone Knows,Bad time. Blazing guitars, signature growling vocals, (soft/caring when necessary)--all Jett constants. "Fetish" rocks as hard as anything shes' done. I could go on but there is really not a bummer on the album. If you have been waiting for a 1st-class Jett album, wait no longer. The wait is over.

Some 25 years after "I Love Rock and Roll" made her a star, who'd have thought that Joan Jett would still be making vital sounding records? "Sinner" is a solid veteran rocker of a disc, with all the hallmarks of Joan's best past work. You want a solid social call out? Joan slaps it to the current regime on the CD's opener "Riddles." Barking out "wake up, people" just before dropping sound bites from Donald Rumsfeld and George W; it's a punky call to arms.

Then comes one of the obligatory covers (and the album's highlight), a ripping cover of Sweet's "Ac/Dc." (The other cover, of The Replacements' "Androgynous," does not fair as well.) "Ac/Dc" crunches the guitar chords, plays with ambiguous sexuality - LOVE that video - and glams like her Gary Glitter covers from the early days.

What holds the CD back is a couple of strange choices in back tracking. The decision to rerecord "Fetish" and "100 Feet Away" wiffs of filler, even if it might be some fans' first chance to hear them. But still, songs like "Everyone Knows" (her gay coming out song?), "Change The World" and a great ballad "Watersign" make up for the shortfalls. The Blackhearts are still kicking up a righteous racket, and "Sinner" is far better then anything we should be expecting at this late a date.

This is classic Joan Jett but all new songs. I LOVE this CD. I plan on buying a couple of more copies to give as gifts for Christmas. I definitely recommend purchasing this CD.

Joan. You don't love me. Because I'm a guy. But I have loved you since 1976. Ok so I'm an old man (age 43). So what. She's just the best rock and roll female on the planet. I like the young ones like Sahara Hotnights and the Donnas as well but they just don't measure up to Joan Born To Be Bad Jett. This album - like most of her other albums - consists of a mix of old and new songs. Doesn't mattar. I love it. And the video... well it confirms what we have always known. Not that it matters. The music matters.

And with an album that's quite good for a Joan Jett studio record. "Riddles" is a standard fare type of song (blues/rock) for Joan and good way to start the album. Following that we get the first single/video, a cover of The Sweet's "A.C.D.C." which she does very nicely (and the video is pretty darn good too). There is a slightly disappointing version of "Andrognyous", which sounds a bit watered down; it's shame because the song works so well in her live show. However, for the most part this album rocks, and in some cases - "Change The World" and "Tube Talkin" - it rocks hard and fast. Worth your time to pick this one up and enjoy.

Amazon Removed My Review
I noticed that a shorter version of the review was posted in the two-star reviews, so I'm a little confused. Perhaps one of Joan's more devoted fans complained about the review and initially got it blocked by an inexperienced Amazon employee. Amazon is pretty good about letting in all reviews,... Read More
